unless he's sure the bloke likes peated,
it's best not to pick it.

Gohan, i think since he's not too fussy and you're not even expected to be an expert, so you won't be an arse about how special the bottle is (hate those guys...), you could just set a budget (the 30-40), go to a shop and find something in that price range with the only rules being "scotch, single malt, nice bottle(perhaps some form of container for bottle).

You can't really go wrong with a scotch, unless you're buying for...well...olgaline :D

I kind of agree with Toto...sounds like your uncle won't know the difference betweeen a £25 bottle and a £40 bottle...so get him a £20 bottle and spend the other £20 on yourself

even so it's still worth looking for a good £20 bottle than a crap £40 bottle

yeah, I'd go along with that. Don't know where you live, but there are some seriously good whisky specialist shops in London

I'd say if looks are what'll make him happy, buy the Dalmore 12 yo, it looks good, and not ljust on pics, oh and the whisky is decent too.

"They actually make a peated version once a year, wich I'd love to try allas, it's eluded me thus far".

If you want to go with best value for money, Definatly go with the Benriach Curiositas Peatedit's suprisingly good.

Peated = Smokey
None peated = well duh!

Peated whiskies are mostly known for the island called Islay "Aila" not "Ailay" :p
They use peat thats been dug "mostly" on the island, wich they burn and use to "dry"
the malted barley, thus the malt picks up these phenols, wich become obviose in the final product

it's a balls thing. they're trying to look árd because they can palate it.

how about Highland Park? It's nothing "out there" or anything but it tastes well enough. I've had 25,18,16 and the 12yo variants and they all taste decent imo.

also,
alot of local stores will have "offers" atm,
which i strongly dout you'll find on the online stores.

Was it the highland park 25 year old that you bought your brother for his wedding, then sneakily snuck back home with you? That stuff was lovely.

You'll probably get it cheaper by not bothering to come here.

Okay, you want the opinion of a whiskey connoisseur? :)

lagavulin_16.jpg

My personal favourite is Lagavulin 16 year old. It is like drinking a winter bonfire. The first thing that hits your palette is the smoky peatiness. As you savour the flavour, you notice a touch of the sea with the most subtle hint of brine and seaweed. As it passes your uvula, it doesn't burn as it goes down. You are left with a warming glow that slowly fades.

There's no denying that Lagavulin has a powerful flavour, but if it's too much for you to drink neat, you can always use a splash of spring water to dilute it a little.

When it comes to single malts, there are several distinct regions with their own characteristics. Islay, Campbeltown, Speyside, Highlands, Islands and Lowlands are the regions and they each have a malt that typifies what they're llike. There is something called the "Classic Malts of Scotland" with 6 whiskies.

Oban, Talisker, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie and (my favourite) Lagavulin.

Have a look at this page on The Whisky Exchange for gift sets.
Gift Packs : The Whisky Exchange
If you look down at the bottom of the page, they have 3 small bottle sets for £32. Take your pick. :)

I like my women like I like my whisky... aged 16 years.

Firstly, it's Whisky not Whiskey if you're talking about Scotch Whisky. :)

There is a very wide spectrum of tastes with Whisky, ranging from peaty to quite light (as already mentioned). Tohtori says you can't go wrong with Scotch, but you can actually go very wrong if you buy the wrong thing. Someone mentioned Laphroaig - personally I absolutely love it, it's my favourite Whisky. However, my whisky loving colleague at work cannot stand Laphroaig and prefers a much more mellow smell and flavour. So yes - you can go very wrong :). Laphroaig has a very medicinal quality to it, like antiseptic (it's high in Iodine). I would also stick with the 10 year old as the 15 year old will blow your head off if you're not used to more mature Whiskies.

If you aren't sure what to buy, you could go with a proven, solid, middle ground Whisky which also has a Christmassy feel to it:

Buy Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish Online at Drinks Direct.co.uk

The Whisky is aged in casks that used to hold port which gives it a very subtle undertone that reminds me very much of a rich Christmas pudding. It's a very beautiful taste with a lovely scent.

Another two good, safe choices would be Highland Park and Macallan 10 year old - both of these would be my starter Whisky down the pub before moving onto the darker and stronger side of Laphroaig ;).

Wich are all owned by the 1 company :p
not sure i'd agree they best represent their perspective regions.

it's not really important.

yes, although macallan has become abit meh! comapred to what they used to be,
and they've more or less abandoned thier sherry casks, in favor of "fine oak"
aka ex-bourbon

You want a Bushmills 21 year old single malt, fucking lush. I can't drink most Scottish stuff, I find it too harsh but a good triple distilled Irish Single is a thing of beauty on the palette.
