Confused When buying a new grafics card...

And it says "recommended CPU 700 watt" does that mean i can use a 700 watt PSU in my computer or does that mean that's the watts the GPU needs above everything else?

Never needed to care before as i've always bought prebuilt computers, but now i really do need to upgrade the GPU and that kinda confused me.

Nonono, that's not a statement from anywhere. That's just me wondering if that's what it means because i don't wanna sit with a brand new grafics card and find out that my PSU is too weak.

/edit: Say the gfx card needs 700w and the cpu needs 100 or something, that means if i have a 700w psu the system won't be stable because i'd need a 800+w psu.. That's what i'm wondering.

If it's a new GPU the wattage has increased significantly, you can use PC Parts picker to work it out, you might be alright with 700.

But to probably more accurately answer your question - I'd imagine that number is their guestimation including the rest of your PC.

700W GPU, you're probably needing 150 on top of that for CPU (I'd look at what that needs..)

If I was running a 5090 and a 9800x3d I'd be looking at 1000W gold.

I have just had this encounter.

Currently, on a 3080 with a 750w psu. Just ordered a 5080, then had to panic order an 850w psu. (also ordered a 240hz 4k monitor to add to the little flex!)

Not sure that I like reverting to higher power PSUs..

Higher wattage PSUs are a tricky area. I'd rather have a gold/plat 850w than a "might as well be brown rated" 900.

Honestly I'd still rather go higher. Just because it can use it doesn't mean it will.

IMO, i'd run the 5090 with a 1200W seasonic with the latest atx 3.1 standard due to the melting 12vhpwr connecter

PCPartPicker doesn't have checks in place for everything like RAM clearence with CPU coolers and case fan compatibility. Interesting build choice you can get something much better for $700 let me know if you want to a build idea. Its only just the i5 10400F isn't really that good to buy compared to some awesome value currently.

Yes i'm aware that the cpu isn't the greatest budget cpu you can get now but everything on that build page other than the graphics card i already own. It's a prebuilt budget pc from 4:ish years ago. I'm basically just getting a new gfx card and wanted to know if i needed to get a new PSU as well and Gwadien recommended pc parts picker.

I will get a better cpu eventually but right now i have a 1660ti which just will not run some of the new games that flat out needs 8 gigs of vram or better to even boot up, so a better grafics card is more important than a cpu.

Fair enough, I mean for 4K it will be fine but for anything lower your CPU is very much bottlenecking. I just asked and was curious.

Yeah I run a 10th gen system with your exac specs lol at home still a very capable machine. i5 10400 and a RTX 3060 since I got this hardware feel free to ask before you buy or make decisions.

Got the graphics card, installed it and booted up a game, went into settings and noticed that the amount of vram used on it is less than on the old card. On my 1660ti the game used basically every bit of the 6 gigs of vram it could get it's hand on just to run it on medium. But on this 3060 the game only needs 5 gig of vram on ultra and barely register a difference when i switch between the presets. Literally 3% vram usage difference between low and ultra... It was much bigger on the old card.. xD

So here's the question: the fuck?

The RTX 3060 has a much better graphics processor than the GTX 1660 Ti (TU116 vs the GA106) so the architecture for memory management is better and stuff. The 1660 Ti basically hate to chug at medium so it tried to use VRAM for its advantage. Hope this helps!

Also a slower memory bus on the 1660 Ti and data bus so its faster and much better loading in and caching textures
