What's the least amount of work you've done in a working day?

As I sit here typing this, and feeling slightly uncomfortable as I'm sat next to someone who is working very hard... it occured to me, I've done pretty much fook all work today.

Or for much of the week.

I get 85% of my work done in hardcore sessions at random times during the day, but at other times I idly surf, or "apply critical patches to important servers" as I like to call it. Allegedly.

To help bolster this blatent lack of work I occasionally ask the bloke next to me his thoughts on something I already know the answer to, but pretend it's vexing me just to appear like I'm actually working. "Hmm, not sure how to handle this state persistance on this shopping basket."

Other times, I'll just either look pained or deep in thought, occasionally exclaiming "Finally!" or "Yes!". Not really loud obviously, but loud enough to be noticed.

I was just curious as to whether or not anyone out there is prepared to admit to doing the least amount of work in a working day, and getting paid for it.. :)

I've sat in a pub on a Friday afternoon with half of my department for the last few months and gone home at 5:00 from the pub.

I sometimes get paid £200 a day for being on standby, and not getting called out :D

I kinda enjoy it. It's somewhat like "the chase". Or something.

I've had a packet of Nurofen resting on my desktop speaker the past 2 days. Occasional rubbing of forehead and the need to walk around eventually prompted my boss to suggest the problem was caused by "prolonged concentration on the problem". "The problem" being the project I'm working on, or not working on - as the case may be. Allegedly.

So not only have I not been working amazingly hard, but Im actually being felt sorry for. Plus Im a "soldier" for coming into work despite having a "raging headache".

The problem I've got really is not laziness, but moreof complete boredom at what I'm finding myself having to do. I guess that's the problem with most jobs really. Oh to have an inspiring job!

I got back from holiday on 16 Feb.

I have probably done about 10 hours of work since then...the rest of my time has been surfing the net.

Literally nothing, juggled a bit and had a laugh with a few colleagues but no work what-so-ever.

hmm. the least amount of work I have done is none at all. I'd like to kid myself into thinking that my presence helps teammates by means of the reassurance that -were complete chaos to break out- there is an experienced person there who will step in and help them sort it.

be that bollocks (or not), it's a given that my output isn't constant heh :)

Hehe.

I kinda tell myself that one too.

In actual fact, it's not that far fetched in an I.T related position tbh. Without bigging up my role or anything I'm sure it must serve as some comfort (and be remunerated accordingly) to my employers that I am in a position to react and deal with technical problems as and when they happen. They seldom do happen of course, because I'm that damn good*

* Or possibly because they just don't.

But joking aside, people are generally paid for their expertise so is it completely unreasonable that they should be paid to be on standby? (even if that isn't the specific terms of their job)

So they think you are working hard, and you think they're working hard, what are the chances none of you are working hard?

I've done maybe 3 hours this week, all at home, might have to pop in over the weekend, but that's about it.

well, my place of work places value on one's networking and people skills as well as technical knowhow. I figure this means that I can sit there and "know people" all day long...and get a raise too.

I've driven 1,400 miles this week, worked like a bastard, even today "working from home" I haven't stopped. I still have 136 items in my inbox that need attention

The best non-work day I ever had was a couple of summers ago when I said I had to visit a site and went out driving in my car. I pootled about then went home. That afternoon I went and had sex with my girlfriend before going back to work for 5pm. Peeps said I looked exhausted.

Hehe. I got paid for sex. :)

On Wednesday I'd say I worked for about 20% of the time I was paid for. It was a quiet night so the other supervisors and myself were just walking around the club playing pigeon toss at all available opportunities. :)

I like to take a shit at work, makes me feel good getting paid for taking a crap..

But that aside, I have had days where I have done nothing, and I mean nothing.. But TBH the day goes really slow when you are doing sweet FA so I at least try to keep mildly busy, even if it is surfing for porn on easynews..

i spent a whole day in the I.T. labs at school. All on the excuse of "working"

i did write a humorous story, but that was for my own benifit and the people around me.
