ok lets try this a different way

Imagine cookie dough, put all your rasins in the middle
Now you roll the dough so that the rasins spread out, but the dough itself has the same volume.
Pretend one of the rasins are our galaxy, this is essentially what the stretching theory is, the size of the universe is finite but its contents are stretching apart

I am sure someone here can explain things better than myself, but thats how i understand it to be

Bear in mind this is one theory there are loads more

And on that note, food time

I understand that but what is the cookie dough in?

its outside the parameters of the universe so we cannot know its laws. there is theories though.

such as the bigbang. we dont know what laws governed the state, so you cannot know what it was.

The balloon description describes it better than cookie dough.

Also - don't forget the big crunch. The idea is still there that expansion of the universe may eventually lead to one big black hole pwning us all in a contraction of matter.

i dont buy the black hole theory at all, even black holes die and altho they do exert extreme gravitational pull, i find it unlikely that a super black hole could destroy the universe, the size it would need to be is unimaginable and stars can only grow to a certain size i got that info off wikipedia from a link on here btw.

entropy is a different matter the universe collapsing under its own weight so to speak. but i think even this theory has plenty of holes in it. but i dont know its way beyond me anyone know what the escape velocity of the universe is lol?

as for the proof you ask for deeb its all theoretical and conjecture. the math is way beyond all of us i would guess, unless some of you are theoretical physicists?

there is no way if knowing, there is no way we can leave it or see outside of it so any theories are just made up out of nothing and are no more valid than saying we are all inside a little bubble on the back of a giant dancing banana because in reality there is no way of knowing the laws by which the "outside" is governed

Its all theory. Nobody knows for sure what the Universe is 'expanding' in to because we do not fully understand the nature of our Universe. Period. (Hell it took me ages to get my head round what anti- matter is -got a headache now just thinking about it)

Is it something to do with cookie dough??

I'm confused

the 11th dimension would be the biggest thing I can think off... can't imagine or think of it in a sane rational way, but none the less, the biggest thing

If you're religious then that can be disputed and i don't really want to ruin this thread with the whole religious debate and the validity of statements backed up by science (feel free to make another thread :))

the universe expanding? who knows but it is currently a scientific fact that objects within it are moving further apart

It isn't a super black hole straight from the start.

It's a series of black holes that ultimately 'join together.'

So do you believe that the String Theory is correct?

the universe expanding?

hawking says it is expanding which gives us one of our concepts of time. the concept that tings generally become more disordered and it takes a lot to reorder something.

when the universe 'crunches' it should appear that time is moving backwards.

i personally believe in the universe expanding and the big crunch but based partly on stuff which won't hold much weight here

So

hello again tris, backwards in billions of years time

whats your theory?
it could be as valid as a lot of others.

I find it fascinating that the universe appears to have a life cycle like everything else.

It is all hypothesis, but the thought of the big crunch is impossible to me -I just cannot comprehend the enormity of it. To me it is like science fiction, especially all the stuff about the nature of 'dark matter'.

I like the string theory as it compartmentalises the natural forces and matter and energy and seems to bring them together in a mathematical way. It makes me feel safe.

....And the idea of the 11th dimension scares me as I dont get what it is. I get that 9 dimensions are space and 1 is time and that they are all squished up so we only see 3, but what the hell is the 11th and why is it important?

Eurrrgh brain freeze. time for bed. Oh yeh meant to say -yes please share Chronic tank

will get back to you on that one, i am heading off to bed soon and rather not rush something for the sake of putting it down

Every object has a gravitational pull, because gravity is based on the mass of an object
Essentially when the universe reaches a critical mass, or stops expanding the mass will be such that gravity will force it all back together causing the universe to collapse (the big crunch theory)
I think eventually all the mass will contract into a single mass similar to that which it started as
