Whats The Best Movie Of All Time?

umm you obviously like eastern martial arts based films almost exclusively, which is fair enough... to call films like Apocalypse Now and The Godfather "crap hollywood films" in comparison, however, is more than a little childish.

i never said apocalypse now and the godfather were crap, just that most of peeps picks were dull hollywood shite. i stand by that view. quite like apocalypse now actually.

oh, and my list only contained 6 kung fu flicks out of the twelve. hardly exclusive. i could have written a list without any but as this is barrysworld it seemed quite appropriate to include some 'action' styles. that and the fact that i've been viewing loads of kung fu recently thanks to all the DVD reissues coming out.

Some of us like more to every film than ridiculous stunts and badly dubbed plots.

hmmm. guess you dont know much about martial arts films huh? the director of such classics like drunken master, legend of a fighter and the iron monkey (Woo-ping Yuen) went on to do all the choreography in the matrix amongst other films... and his brother worked on the action scenes for charlies angels. bad stunts? lol.

hollywood owes a lot to asian cinema.... and i've not even mentioned 'john woo' yet...

I *knew* you were going to say something patronising and condascending like that. Hence why I didn't mention my extensive collection of Bruce Lee/Jackie Chan films.

Never said it didn't (although I personally think John Woo is vastly overrated). When I look at everyone's lists tho, probably 70-80% of the films on there are recognised "classics", and hardly "hollywood shite", so I just thought I'd wind you up a bit :)

well, you did seem a little naive mate. but then you have an extensive bruce and jackie collection do you? oh yeah so really you were an expert in asian cinema all along. how witty of you.

a wind up huh? and and didnt i fall for it hook line rod and fishermans arm. heheheheheh. guess you're just a bit more clever than i am.

:D

and i'd say 70-80% of the films listed in this thread were shite, 'recognised "classics"' or not. predictable codswallop most of 'em. the 'sunny delight' of filmmaking.... but that's just my opinion. heheheheh.

i agree that john woo is overrated though. not a big fan myself. but he has made a big impact on hollywood which was my point.

I think a few good war films like Full Metal Jacket and Platoon need to be mentioned.

and everyone seems to have forgotten about Quentin Tarantino. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs were f*cking classics. Other good gangsta flicks like Goodfellas and Casino didn't get a word in either. btw Lock Stock rules.

As far as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon goes I think the film was crap. They went way too far with the strings and the story was rubbish. The kung fu made it bearable but overall it was crap.

Generally anything with Nicholas Cage in it is cool. Mostly action movies like Face Off (with the two golden baretta's... cool :p). But the best action movie ever has to be The Rock.

Going to see Tomb Raider tommorow, critics said it was crap but thats what they said about mummy returns (which may rely entirely on special effects but who gives a toss it's a good film)

The matrix was a good film, but has anyone actually stopped gawping at the graphics and paid attention to the script?

They're SHIT

and face/off? oh fucking hell, what an AWFUL film. and what was with travolta and that thing with his hand on peoples faces, i mean how shit was that?

So..best films? hmmm

Clockwork orange is brill
Blade Runner is ace and better than the book.
Memento is definatley one of the most original films i've seen
and american beauty is up there too

can't think of anything else

agree with u about american beauty

about Face/Off, ok the hand thing on peoples faces was pretty gay but some of the action sequences were quite good like near the end in the two speedboats. You also need to consider how well the actors both share the same roles in the film which i thought was neat.

agreed crouching tiger is a top knotch film
american beauty again is great

face/off tho compared to john woo's other works..most notably 'the killer' is pretty lame.

and for the criticisms of 'Hollywood' directors and being the 'sunny delight' of film making:
i would hardly call people like martin scorsese and stanley kubrick bland and predictible.
but i would agree that 'the matrix' is a kung fu movie diluted with a poor sci-fi plot.
Drunken Master as pointed out by someone else earlier is a great movie altho i tend not to get to overwhelmed with the whole martial arts stuff.
its also hard to see how people could ignore great directors like John Ford and Akira Kurosawa. Films like the Searchers and Seven Samurai/Yojimbo cannot really be ignored.
it seems really that people ignore almost 70 years of film history along with works from many other countries and are all too willing to accept only the films close to them.
oh and michael bay

Calm down. Crouching tiger was basically about a sword getting nicked by some ancient chick that they didn't let into some kung fu school years ago getting her revenge and then getting whipped. Then you had her apprentice who was going to get married but as it turns out she met this bandit type in a raid once and wanted to be with him instead. I do understand it, and it's a load of shite.

Clockwork Orange - the most dissapointing movie I've ever seen... ultraviolence - where ?? So they kick the shit outta a couple of peeps... not quite ultraviolence... boring, overated, crap. The only reason it was banned is 'coz of all the statues of dicks all over the place...

a) it's quite old. Violence has become a lot more graphic as time goes on.

b) it is quite disturbing. people just get desensitised to things.

c) kubrik actually banned it himself because of the nutcases who were harassing him about it. Can't if they were against it or insane fans or whatever..but he banned it himself.

Fair enough, but that just proves that Kubrick was a complete and utter Nutter !!! Why make a movie and ban it yourself - one word = publicity... and whaddya know, it worked

thats about right. except star wars was a lot more complex with the rebels and the empire and the rest of it. crouching tiger's plot was pretty much outlined in the few lines I wrote earlier, but star wars would take a page or two. If there was anything I missed in crouching tiger... my bad.

though the reason star wars would take up a few pages is coz there have already been four movies with two on the way. wot about explainig the matrix, you could probably end up writing about five pages aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!

Yeah kubrik banned it so he could get loads of publicity for the film, so that when he dies and they release it, he will get loads of money!.. wait there's a flaw in that plan somewhere.

The reason he banned it was because of all the psycho stalkers he was getting because of it. It was to do with his safety. He may have been a nutter, but he was not without reason for banning clockwork orange

clockwork orange is an instant classic.
god like directing etc.

it wasnt about publicity as his other projects proved, he wasnt in it for the money.
