Yeah it's been under development for a long long time as a kind of prototype next-generation infantry weapon, sposed to be pretty groovy. I think research emphasis (read: funding) went into it after the H&K caseless system (G11) went down the tubes in the reunification of Germany.

The idea behind it is to give every soldier a 20mm grenade launcher combined with things like video & laser rangefinder systems specifically to allow them to fire grenades to airburst thus providing indirect-fire capabilities. If it all worked as the blurb says then it could theoretically cause a similar change in infantry combat to the change caused by the development of BVR fire & forget air-to-air missiles for fighter aircraft. Theory. Money. Blah blah.

As for some people talking about it earlier, the FN P90 was designed as a light, compact full auto weapon designed for use by non combatents in combat situations like medics etc.

It is truly a spray and pray weapon :/
