Rather than Doom, why not Wolfenstein 3D? That was out before doom, wasn't it? And the engine was virtually identical for the first doom...

Duke Nukem 3D i think pushed that bar up, though only for a few months...

I put doom as it was very easy to network to get 4 players running around the same map.

Baldurs Gate. I've never seen other games that had me addicted like that one. The other blackisle/bioware games after that also had me junking pixles but BG1 I have to vote as 'superiour' of it's time.
