So I'm struggling a bit with listening material which makes me a sad bunny... I used to be so very into discovering new music that I enjoy and if been away from it so long I really do not know where to start especially as my taste is so very broad.... Very occasionally I find a new (old to the rest of the world) album / group which I absolutely love, currently 'the Decemberists' thanks to TdC.

Currently I want to listen more to dark modern folk and on the other hand i want some new happy bouncy music... Sensible recommendations would be very welcome boys (and the few girls that are left).

Do you mean dark in terms of sound or lyrical content?

Some stuff I like which I'd tentatively call 'modern folk' but it's quite hard to quantify what is and what isn't with that kind of stuff:

If you enjoy Sun Kil Moon, Mark Kozelek has a massive back catalogue as Sun Kil Moon, Mark Kozelek and Red House Painters (his first band).

(Quite possibly the best voice I've ever heard for this kind of music)

(My favourite recording artist, especially this song. Perfection.)

I listened Miri and although pretty in parts both tempo and rhythm weren't enough to make me go back for more :). Just lacked a darker edge. Currently I have taken a step back in time and am spending time wearing myself out to aquasky vs masterblaster (not folky at all :p) the break in tempo at 1.10 when that provocative bass line drops .... I have to bounce...

Surrounded by enemies
walk the the path of your time.
In the midst of a bloddy storm
commit yourself to war.

You may ask in fear,
naked (uncovered), open:
with what will I fight,
what is my weapon?

Here is your guard against violence
here is your sword:
faith in worth of life,
humanities worth.

For the sake of our future,
seek it and nurture it,

--------------------------

Besieged by enemies,
walk the path of your time!
During a bloody storm -
commit yourself to war!

Maybe you ask in anguish,
uncovered, open
with what should I fight
what are my weapons?

Here is your guard against violence,
Here is your sword:
faith in our lives,
humanities worth.

For all our futures sake,
seek it and cultivate it,
die if you must - but:
increase it and strengthen it!

Quietly conveys the grenades
rolling belt
Stop their drive for death
stop them with spirit!

War is contempt for life.
Peace is to create.
Throw in all your might:
death will lose!

Love and enriched with dream
everything great that was!
Go for the unknown
wrest its answers.

Uninhabited power stations,
unknown stars.
Create them, with spared lifes
bold brains!

Noble is man,
the earth is rich!
If distress and hunger is found here
it is due to betrayal.

Crush it! In life's name
will injustice fall.
Sunshine and bread and spirit
is owned by all.

Then drop weapons
powerless down!
If we create respect for life
we create peace.

The person whom with the right arm
carries a burden,
precious and inalienable,
can not kill.

This is our promise
from brother to brother:
we will be good to
humanities earth.

We will take care of
beauty, warmth
as if we bore a child
gently on the arm!

Norsk orginal:
Kringsatt av Fiender,
gå inn i din tid!
Under en blodig storm -
vi deg til strid!

Kanskje du spør i angst,
udekket, åpen:
hva skal jeg kjempe med
hva er mitt våpen?

Her er ditt vern mot vold,
her er ditt sverd:
troen på livet vårt,
menneskets verd.

For all vår fremtids skyld,
søk det og dyrk det,
dø om du må - men:
øk det og styrk det!

Stilt går granatenes
glidende bånd
Stans deres drift mot død
stans dem med ånd!

Krig er forakt for liv.
Fred er å skape.
Kast dine krefter inn:
døden skal tape!

Elsk og berik med drøm
alt stort som var!
Gå mot det ukjente
fravrist det svar.

Ubygde kraftverker,
ukjente stjerner.
Skap dem, med skånet livs
dristige hjerner!

Edelt er mennesket,
jorden er rik!
Finnes her nød og sult
skyldes det svik.

Knus det! I livets navn
skal urett falle.
Solskinn og brød og ånd
eies av alle.

Da synker våpnene
maktesløs ned!
Skaper vi menneskeverd
skaper vi fred.

Den som med høyre arm
bærer en byrde,
dyr og umistelig,
kan ikke myrde.

Dette er løftet vårt
fra bror til bror:
vi vil bli gode mot
menskenes jord.

Vi vil ta vare på
skjønnheten, varmen
som om vi bar et barn
varsomt på armen!

I feel old as I had 'euroman cometh' on vinyl... I was 9 ;/ at that time I loved loved loved the stranglers, even though I really didn't get the lyrics. Looking back my dad must have raised an eyebrow or two at me chirping away to 'bring on the nubiles'.

I think I wanted this album because JJ Burnel was hotter that hot and of course I loved 'Jellyfish' and 'do the European'. I discovered this reincarnation of 'do the European' much much later on.. Love it!
