Whats the quickest way to drop a few pounds to lower my BMI?

Its around 28-29 atm and it needs to stay below 30.

Would rather drop it to 26-27 but have only till the start of feb to do it.

Any ideas?

Is it a case of doing more cardio to avoid building muscle?

Well yes, most the time it's about some diet thing.

Cider is not good for the waistline.

Remember one guy complaining about not losing weight even if he was eating barely nothing. Same guy also had a 12 pack of beer every friday. I have to admit, i giggled like a japanese schoolgirl :p

Also, everyone eats cake! You lie

eat salad and chicken for a few weeks?

also, if you're packing a lot of muscle your regular BMI calculation will NOT be accurate because you will have more mass for your height/weight/age/etc. you will have to compensate the equation for that. the short is that you mass more but your BMI is actually less.

and lay off the cake dude, I mean, seriously, everyone knows you're on the cake ;)

Whats your height and weight and build? How much do you currently eat/drink and how much exercise do you do?

The BMI is not a perfect measure of if you are overweight and it works less well for tall people or people that are muscular.

Eat less and exercise more will help you lose weight, but its difficult to say what is likely to help most if we don't know what your current lifestyle is like. You may find that you put on weight as an indirect result of stopping smoking. People often snack to take their mind off things or find that not having smoking breaks during meals means they eat more.

Also why does your BMI need to be under 30? Dieting just to hit a short term target is not very healthy if you keep doing it.

I have my medical on the 3rd Feb, BMI has to be under 30 to pass. I'm 13stone 10, 5ft9. Got abit of a beer gut but can bench/dead lift my own body weight, I regularly rock climb twice a week. Other than that I sleep, eat, go to uni, drink (twice or so a week).

Powder diet lost me 8.5 kg in two weeks this last October. Straight powder and water, nothing else, for two full weeks.

After that i substituted meals, so been eating just normal breakfast, normal dinner (favourite dinner being chicken salad with fiber pasta, yum!), and three powder bags in between during the day. Been losing almost 1kg per week since then. I lost 13.5 kg in total between October 20th until Xmas. :p And I've not been working out any more than usual either.

Not saying it will work for you; but if you've not tried it and you're in a hurry, give it some thought. :D For me it was a huge motivation to lose weight that quickly, and since then it's just not been worth it eating bad, because of the hellish first two weeks... don't want them to be wasted! :)

.

It doesn't matter if you're tall because it takes into account your height and weight :p

It depends, on what the medical is for. If it is a medical for some bank for health insurance purposes then it will probably simply state BMI < 30. If it is for a job where you do physical work, then they might take it into account. Having said that a BMI of over 30 is overweight. You would have to be an olympic weight lifter to have a BMI of 30 and not have fat on you. Also you aren't particularly tall. BMI is normally the less accuracte for people who are 6"+.

I would suggest you do try and do some low impact exercise such as walking, cycling or swimming. 30+ mins a couple of times a week could really help.

If you drink beer/larger/cider you could try reducing that, you could always try drinking wine! Alot less calories in total.

Do you snack alot? Alot of people don't realise how much they eat between meals. If you are one of those people that seem to eat half a packet of biscuits/donuts because they just happen to be in the office that could be something worth stopping. When it comes to eating try and have smaller meals rather than skipping meals.

If your only goal is to drop your BMI then the quickest way to do that is to starve yourself. (And no im not suggesting he should do that, just answering his question. :p)

But why is the BMI so important to you/someone else? The whole thing is bullshit anyway. According to my BMI im obese.. :ninja:

edit for cadelin: My BMI is 30. I do carry some fat but most of that is muscle.

Just because it takes it into account doesn't mean it does it accurately. There are certainly more factors than just your height and weight that determine if you are overweight or not.

The BMI is meant to be a quick easy way of telling if somebody is overweight. The formula is kept simple and is designed around the average person and not unusual cases such as very tall people or athletic people. Given that is is the same for men + women to keep it simple alot of men who are simply taller than average can find the BMI gives slightly odd results.

Well from what you have told me, you are overweight but your BMI is not going to fail you this test as it stands.

Weight yourself everyday and write it down. Maybe spend a couple of days writing down everything you eat and figure out where the extra calories come from. Keep active, regular light exercise will raise your metabolism. That should hopefully make sure your weight is kept firmly below the 30 mark.

Athletic people yes, tall people no, because it gives a ratio between your height and weight. If you're shorter your ideal weight is less, if you're taller it is more.

It's a measure of heaviness, not body composition.

Given that you drink cider shouldn't your optimal BMI be 18-23 then? Or does Women have the same scale? :p

Its a ratio between your height squared and your weight. But why does that make it correct? Why not use height ^3 or ^1.5?

The BMI is an approximation and the reason ^2 is used is partly because it is reasonably accuracte but also because most people have that button on their calculator.

It's fairly easy. Don't eat carbs and do alot more cardio training than weight lifting.

? +30 BMI is fat, fact.

Do you know what BMI is? A high BMI doesn't mean you're fat. It only messures your wieght and height and does not take into account how much fat or muscles you got.

It doesn't, but if unless you're not gonna have a BMI over 30 if you're not proper built.

I'd have though most athletes would be in the 25-30 range, which is overweight, while 30+ is obese.

A few years ago i stopped eating stuff like crisps, choccy bars and soft drinks, i also stopped drinking and went from 2 to 1 sugar in my tea. i didnt change anything else, i felt tired for a couple of weeks by about 3.00pm but i lost 1 and a half stone in about 3 months.

I know that doesnt help your Feb deadline, but it shows how just cutting out a little of the crap makes a difference, sweets and crisps make such a difference
