Warning: SPYWARE on catacombs website

I just wanted to warn you all that catacombs is a very nasty website, or rather they are a bunch of non-responsible money hungry twats! That dont care what their advertisements do, as long as they get paid.

When visiting [warning]http://daoc.catacombs.com/[/warning] right now, a popup window attempted to install the Gator spyware program on my pc.

Gator is a program that logs your online activity, logs what you type in message boxes, etc. and send it all to a sleezy company in Las Vegas (last time i read about it)

I think catacombs have some really nice functions, nice beastiary, nice char builder, nice crafted stuff lists. And i'd like to support them, but if they pull shit like this, fuck them, im turning popups off!

(several products can turn popups off, Mozilla, Opera, Norton Personal Firewall, Popup Disabler etc.)

Thanks for the URL. I installed and ran Ad-aware ... it found 250 components!! Mostly comet cursor, with some gator. Needless to say, they are all gone now.

I have Office Scan and Norton firewall running on my PC.
On one those map sites linked from the WArcry site.
I get a virus warning.

I click on the link for the map and the linked site tries to download a Word Document with a virus embedded into it.

If you don't want gator to try to install, just add www.gator.com to your restricted sites list in IE, then it'll never even be loaded... :D

I registered Ad-Aware, you get an on-access scanner that stops spyware before it can install, marvelous :)

I've given up ,I've downloaded every patch that Microshat have written and still my IE doesn't belong to me.
Every 2 days I open up to endless porn site popups, which requires a ctrl-alt-del to close.
I haven't been able to adjust options from the IE window for years, all blocked out, even a re-install didn't help.

Whose bleedin smart idea was it to allow web sites to alter your settings!!! This should have been eliminated at the very beginning of the coding.

thanks for the warning but,

i use mozilla, would be pressed to remember what a pop-up looks like, and as for doubleclick.net spy cookies, nice try but they wont get on my box

still wondereing why ppl want to use those ad-bloking proxies if there is a good browser out there that does it all and you dont have to run any other apps

just my 2c

Opera doesn't work on a lot of sites (maybe the new version will be better)

Mozilla/Netscape is
a) too slow to load (I refuse to leave it memory resident with quicklaunch)
b) incompatible with firewalls that need logins
c) slow to browse pages with

:m00: :m00: :m00: :m00: :m00:

IMO of course... :p :p :p :p

Yeah thanks, might try Opera, have actually downloaded it but not run it.
If Opera can do it why not IE?
Obviously a conspiracy, I don't get it, I reloaded, added all patches and cleared all the crap, then accidently (cough) browsed an entertainment site and bang!
Bookmarks changed, hjomepage changed, option locked out, random homepage scripts running.

WHERE'S MY GUNNN!!!

Opera doesn't like IE-tuned websites (because they all use the non-standard IE extensions)

Main thing opera doens't do is layer clipping so some javascript will break.

Works fine on pretty much anything that doesn't require javascript does opera :)

I don't see what your problem is, you have a choice to click yes or no. If you don't want it then fine, you click No. How are companies supposed to make money, by doing nothing? Barrysworld will soon start charging for sub to the site, are you gonna moan about that and call tehm money greedy twats? Hell, most of the population of this planet must be money greedy for working and earning money.

Not the point... theres a lot of them that abuse bugs in IE and you don't get the chance to choose yes or no...

Also, those little 'signed program' windows are very annoying :) woe betide the technophobe novice user that gets that thrown up at them and ticks 'always trust content from...' because they've only ever seen those from Microsoft or Adobe ;)

(not that I'd trust Microsoft or Adobe ;))

Hmmm..... this has nothing to do with Catacombs

They get money from a banner/popup company, that company chooses which banner will popup, Catacombs only make the Popup appear and not what the popup is about, theyre random and the Banner company chooses which ones are in the random cycle.

I never clicked yes to have Gator, 'Alexa', Cydoor etc. lay there eggs in my precious system...

And BW charging money to play on their servers? *shrugs* I could care less... I already pay 20.- Euros (hey, the missus wanted an account, too;)) a month to GOA.

As long as the message boards are free...................;)

you are kidding right?

1 thing is to have someone display adds for you, another thing is to have someone pretend to display adds for you, and then try to install spyware..... i can tell you which one of those i would pull the plug on if it was my website.

imo the creepiness/shittyness of installing spyware, is left to a very small percentage of websites, but the more we start tolerating it, the more it will spread.

ps. still 3x? stopped xping?

U can still browse cata's just run ad-aware after
then reboot and run it again <-- if your paraniod :)

Just remember to never click yes, that you will never win anything from a pop-up, and have ad-aware installed.

Only way to block with IE is in security, in the internet options. But ya gotta add the sites manually, so i make a note of the ones like gator and put em in.

Only prob is you end up with a list a mile long :(

i've been in contact with catacombs management, and they say that they drop advertisers that do this kindda stuff, but from the looks of the reply i got, they may be having problems with advertisers hiding the nasty popups from catacombs staff. (in various ways)

Yes, they CAN remove certain advertisers from the random list of banners/popups that are being shown. So it's not Catacombs who chooses to let spyware banners popup. Tho they can remove them by asking the company that pays em for the advertisements.

ps. i slowed down a bit
