Society failed on two accounts, one by letting an innocent child endure what he did. Then secondly society failed to identify and destroy the monster the abuse turned him into. Most Serial killers have similiar backgrounds where they endure horrible childhoods and are turned into monsters but no matter which way you spin it they DO become monsters. The interesting angle comes from the fact hundreds of thousands of people endure just as horrific childhoods but manage to avoid/resist becoming the monster.
