For some reason recently all my friends have been buying new cars at the same time. One has just bought and evo VIII and stazbumpa has just purchased a 06 plate (new shape) honda civic to shame my 55 plate (old shape) honda civic.

When I bought my type S honda civic I really wanted a type R but couldnt afford it. Now I can and I've seen one on auto trader that could be mine for a part exchange plus 3k if my calculations are correct. It is the same age as mine but has 20k less miles on the clock (35000 mine has 55000), tinted windows, air con that probably works unlike mine, and another 92bhp obviously. Trouble is if its worth it, increased fuel consumption, insurance, etc for what could esentially be a dick measuring competition/ early mid life crisis.

Somebody talk me out of it or tell me I'd be silly not to.

The new civic's are ugly as fuck. You are shaming staz with your far superior looking car.

I've yet to meet a single person who doesn't share this view, I think even staz prefers the old shape lol.

I prefer the new shape. Sort of space-agey. Wouldn't buy one though, I prefer torque to insane revs. If you like that sort of thing and you can afford it, buy it. Nowt wrong with mid-life crises, I've had several, and you're a long time dead.

I test drove the new type-r when we were buying our car last year. It drove nicely but the interior looked like it had been designed by a 3 year old. I think they are now bringing out a hybrid civic which looks even worse inside.

Just do the sums, if you can afford it without bankrupting yourself get the old Type-R, looks like a nice motor.

None of the above.
Get a Mazda RX8. It's different to what your mates have and yet is still a looker with a decent amount of power under the bonnet.

Spot on, I way prefer the older shape Civic the new ones are something that Meg would buy probably.

Stick with yours Dave, the Type R's are a pain in the arse to get speed out of, you have to rev the AIDS off them and it always feels uncomfy when doing it. I had an Accord Type R (quicker than the Civic) and I hated giving it abuse, always made me grit my teeth.

In my opinion you get more for your money with Subaru's and even Saab's or Volvo's. Volvo S60 R would pwn the Civic and would be pretty fucking close to the Evo and you won't look a nimrod in it.

Can't go wrong with a Type-R in that shape really (my sister has one), it's a reliable hot hatch that i'm sure you'll enjoy. It's not my cup of tea but those that have them love them.

Bodhi will be along in 10 minutes to recommend an alternative. I'm guessing a Golf.

Why are you prattling around with some poxy noisy as hell (in a bad way) wrong-wheel drive shopping trolley?

Get a real car, like I did. Get a 4.0 N/A V8 TVR Chimaera, and frighten dogs and pensioners for a living.

The alfa romeo GTV 6 is on standby for track days when the weather improves :p

So if you have a track slag and you want something for day to day use, get an old M5.

Can I just say, my eldest sister has just announced she's 12 weeks pregnant and that she'll need to get a sensible car. She has a practically untouched Civic Type R that she doesn't want to trade in and can't be arsed to sell it.

So she's offered to give it to me.

For free.

Win.
