Dilemma

For the last couple of months I've been working at a Triumph dealership selling motorcycles.

For anyone that dont know me, this is my natural environment :)

Thing is, the shop I have joined is a massive failure. They have another estabilished branch just down the road, and the vast majority of the sales go down there. Like, I've sold TWO bikes this month. In my bike last job I have sold 10 in a day ...

So, the thing is, I'm not making any bloody money. In fact, what with it costing me up to 75 quid a week in petrol, I think I'm probably down from the previous job.

Add to that the fact I'm working every saturday, plus every other sunday.

I actually can put up with these things, but it's giving my wife some jip as you can imagine.

Now I think I'm about to get offerred another job, back in my other "profession", debt collecting ;) This is monday to friday, 9 to 5, locally, for better basic money than I'm getting.

I suspect my wife wants me to take the job, though she wouldnt say as much.

What would you do?

Can you survive on the money you are on? Is there a chance to improve the standing of your shop, with a little publicity, or events?

Life is too short to be miserable, if debt collecting would make you feel that way, but on the other hand, needs must when the devil drives.

You'd have to give us some figures fella. Obviously there's some sort of commission in the bike shop. How many bikes would you have to flog a month to match the pay of the 9-5 office job?

burn the shop down and get a job at the successful branch down the road.

Two Triumph dealers close to each other? Surely the market isn't big enough to support that? (NB. I looked at dealers on the Triumph website and I'm kind of confused by that, but never mind).

Have to admit, I'd take it on the chin as much as I could if it was a choice between selling bikes or debt collecting, but, how big a gap are we talking about, and is there a danger that the dealer is going to go titsup if things are that bad? That's got to be the key part of your decision making as there's no point in sticking with what you love if its not going to be there in six months. And I suppose there's no chance of a transfer to the other dealer?

I fucking aint mate lol :)

The difference is 4 grand basic, plus a weekly saving in petrol of maybe 30 quid a week. I was told I'd be clearing a decent 30k at this job right now, but frankly I find that difficult to believe atm :( Of course the other job has comission too.

Thing is, I knew that it would be bad for the travelling, and for the hours, I didnt like any of it, but I was prepared to put up with it for the money and to enjoy my job. However if I'm not getting any money, then it puts it into a different perspective. Add to that the fact that me and my wife arnt spending much time together, which is upsetting her, and therein is the dilemma.

Happy days and sad nights, or happy weekends and nights, and sad days? I'm stumped.

I'd take the Debt collecting job! But only as as stop gap until you can find a bike job closer to you in the future when things start to turn around.

I can't imagine you're all that happy at your current job if you are not being given a real chance to do what you do best. Which is selling bikes to people.

Add into that your personal life taking a hit, it's no good at all!

So take it on the chin, chase up people who owe shit and when the tide starts to turn get back into what you love!!

Thing with the debt job, it's commercial debt not personal, so I wouldnt have to listen to people whining so much. The last job was amazing, solid hours of scousers telling you why they couldnt afford £5.00 a month to pay thier water bill. It was grim.

For me this isnt so much about the money, it's about the happiness factor. I want to be happy at home with my wife, and I want to be happy at work.

Debt Collection must be highly paid at the minute. Go where the demand is.

Do you take your shotgun ?

Maimed people however...

You could load your shotgun with cheese. If that's still too fatal, try Nutella.

Or soft cheese.

Take the money with the debt job, be happy at home as that is what matters at the end of the day. Doesn't sound like this current job will last and I doubt in the climate a lot comes up?

It must be a bit dull just standing around selling two bikes in a month!

I would also take the debt collection job, have an easy time at home and then look for a bike selling job!

take the debt collection job. dislike your days, but love your time off.

You're not stumped fella, you just don't want to go back to debt collecting. I totally sympathise but you can't live off wishful thinking. Take the mundane asylum offer then spend the extra cash going out with your missus. Make your weekends so good that you never remember the week.

are there no other bike franchises near you that you could work in?

might be worth pimping yourself around looking for other jobs.

My problem is solved :)

My old boss has called offering my old job back, in a new shop. Closer to home, better money, and still working with bikes.

Yay :D

Thanks chums, funny how it all comes out in the end aint it? I will actually really really miss my workmates at Triumph, but it's a no-brainer really, less than half the distance to travel, loads more money, better hours and more responsibility.

Only thing, I'm on holiday for the next 10 days, but I'm going to give in my notice monday I expect, that will really cheer 'em up :D
