However, people, including around here, continue to use it all the time. So horses for courses, from "comrade Scouse".

That isn't your nickname, champagne socialist Scouse.

My natural reaction has always been that it is tragic that these shootings happen, but it isn't new and something that won't change at all because of what people like Charlie Kirk believe.

That's your nickname for me. Bodhi calls me comrade (as well as a few others). Gwadien thinks I'm mind-captured by 4chan and the extreme right wing because of all the social media I consume (because he's so young he can't imagine a world with people who don't do social).

Either way, socialist eh? I surely must opine those views, even if I don't put them into practice, right? ;)

I might take Wednesday off. One of the lunatics I bumped into in Oxford was telling me all about how something big was going to kick off.

Gonna have to speak to my brother about him borrowing one of those lego diggers so I can dig a deep bunker in the back garden. I have some leftover wood, cresote, tubing and many stepladders, oh and most importantly solar power now :)

Considering the amount of misinformation being spewed from all fronts in the US, and particularly in this case i think the only thing I trust right now is that the dude killed him.

Guardian had a similar. It's got the actual conversation between him and his partner.

Eh the romance partner thing came from the prosecutor

This is the same week the director of the fbi claims Epstein didn't traffic anyone so my skepticism of US govt officials and what they say is at an all time high

I mean, if you're at that level of skepticism then there's no point in you following anything about the US - because unless you're there on the ground you can't validate anything.

The narrative in the West is certainly quite rabid. We've a health secretary in the UK who's just said "we believe in free speech, apart from all of these sorts of things we don't like..." and the US, and yes, I know they're not an honest actor, are calling us out on our hypocricy.

But they still can't put people in jail for stuff they simply say in the US. There is a level of constitutional protection from criminal censure. So until that is reversed, whatever they do, I'll still see them as the same sort of animals we are, because they are, but with a better system than we've got.

Even if the current incumbent is a wanker.

(But then, their last one was, with better PR, and ours is a racist thundercunt who's pretending not to be)

They literally have been putting people in jail for what they say for the last 8-9 months where have you been?

Pretty sure that's been the UK, unless I've missed some obvious examples in the US.

I get that lots of scumbags who've been celebrating Kirk's assassination have been getting sacked, however that's more down to corporate social media policies suggesting don't be a twat on SM, but little Government involvement there.

Will admit I wasn't comfortable with Bondi 's hate speech comments yesterday - unless it's incitement even hate speech is protected by the 1st Amendment.

The Vice President sat on a podcast and told people they will be fired if they don't toe the line, no government involvement my ass

Incitement to violence wasn't removed from 1st Amendment protection until 1969. Which is a shame, as it should be protected - as it was originally intended to be.

Speech is speech. There are times when incitement to violence is the correct course - hopefully producing action.

Anyway - I don't see examples of people getting locked up for speech violations in the US. Thousands in the UK under our inherently racist Labour overlord but not in the US.

If you get fired for not towing the line? Different thing. But you don't get a criminal record for it.

Its still government interference if they punish companies that don't follow suit

Government departments also have social media policies as well you know.

However given the lack of examples provided I'll assume your initial comment was bollocks.

Assume what you like, I mostly post here to vent, giving examples is usually met with derision or a wall of text so why bother. ;)

Blanket-threatening foreigners who say mean things about Kirk. No government involvement though.

You mean apart from the VPOTUS encouraging companies to do it? Sure no government involvement at all.

Bullshit. He said the square root of fuck all about "government departments".
“When you see someone celebrating Charlie’s murder, call them out, and, hell, call their employer,” the vice president urged his listeners. “We don’t believe in political violence, but we do believe in civility. And there is no civility in the celebration of political assassination.”

And to be clear here. celebrating someone's death isn't terrorism or incitement to violence. It's distasteful but that's all.

And if you post distasteful comments on social media and it's easy to link you back to your employers and they take a dim view of it, they are well within their rights to take further action. If you're also not performing well in your job as per that NYT reporter who got canned, then it may be just the excuse your employer needs to show you the door.

Part of me does find it all incredibly amusing however. Historically "the left" have found offense archaeology and digging up 10 year old tweets to get people fired hilarious - now the roles have switched it seems it's less amusing.

Funny that.
