aye, Wij. He told me that he had just bought a new system based around the 1800+ just at the time I was thinking about getting a new pc myself. Funny thing is now Wij and I have near identical systems [as in same mobo, cpu and ram].

Now I'm saving up to get the h00ge 22" iiyama and a gF-3. Not sure about the geffer tho as my gf2GTS works perfectly fine and runs muy smooth with the 1800+ powering it

Actually, I'd rather like that 18.1" tft they're making but I've heard scary things about tft lag and suchlike. I've never seen it irl tho so I can't really comment. A mate of mine has that double A4 sized apple tft thing. it's a fscking monster woo 24" or something eek

The reason for no Linux client atm:

The UD Agent itself does run in Linux. In fact, a large number of our coders conduct their primary development in Linux. However, the THINK application module itself has not been ported to Linux. This is the reason we cannot roll out a Linux agent for the Cancer project. We can give you a Linux UD agent today, but you couldn't participate in the Cancer project with it.
THINK is written in FORTRAN (yes, you heard that correctly) and has been compiled for our Win32 agent using the Intel FORTRAN Compiler. The THINK code relies on extensions to FORTRAN which are not available in the commonly-used g77 FORTRAN compiler.

Unfortunately, the Intel FORTRAN compiler for Linux is not yet available to us, as it is still in beta test. It's possible that there are alternative commercial FORTRAN compilers which could support the specific extensions required to build THINK, but UD is not in a position to evaluate those alternatives at this time.

While we are reluctant to disappoint Linux (and other Unix) participants, the reality of the situation is that it is more important for UD to focus on enhancing the current agent and responding quickly to bugs and usability concerns that have
arisen from the successful public launch of the THINk project. To divert developer attention would hinder our ability to quickly respond to more immediate issues.

From a pure capacity standpoint, the lack of Linux support represents at most a 6% loss of potential horsepower (judging from distributed.net's OS stats). I suspect that the 6% of distributed.net's machines running Linux is a higher percentage than UD would realize, given the more technical/early-adopter demographics of the distributed.net userbase, too.

Believe me, it's a frustrating compromise to have to make. We are, at our heart, a bunch of Unix geeks. I'm typing this response right now in vim on my FreeBSD workstation and I'll be posting it with mozilla once it's ispelled. However, it's in UD's best interests right now to refine the current platform and continue to mature the product before we dilute our energies on multiple platform support.

Until the Intel FORTRAN compiler is released for Linux, or until we have a paying customer with a demand for Linux agent support (which would elevate our need to build a Linux agent support structure), Linux agent support will likely remain a secondary goal to our other priorities right now.
