I got a VGA lead today for my Xbox 360. Plugged it in and all was fine. Went to the Xbox 360 display settings and chose the highest resolution, because I'm a bloke and because I could. Why start on the lower settings and work up when I can just go for gold from the start.

Anyway, my telly doesn't display in the resolution I selected so I now have sound but no picture via VGA, it all works fine through component but that doesn't allow me to change resolutions it only allows me to change between 720p, 1080i, 1080p etc.

If it was a PC I would just remove the GFX card to reset it, is there any way I can do something similar on the Xbox 360?

I really don't want to remove the lead and try it on another telly because it was an absolute nightmare to feed through, I do hope there is another way.

Incidently does the 360 do 1080p in any way shape or form?

TIA.

hmm, only way can think of doing it is, finding someone with a tv that does support the setting you put it. Set it up on that tv and turn the settings down to what yours can support.

Oh, and 1080pp, the new xbox elite what ever it is supports it.

Try this Trem:

To reset the display settings of the Xbox 360 console to the default settings, follow these steps:1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
2. Turn the console off.
3. Turn the console on.

Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn the console on by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller. Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller will have the upper-left quadrant light illuminated.
4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button, and then pull the right trigger at the same time.
5. The Xbox Dashboard resets the display settings to the default settings, and then automatically restarts the console

Thanks Dys worked like a charm (after sussing out when to press the buttons).

It seems that I mashed the buttons after setting the wrong display which accepted it, because I'm a bloke and thats what we do.

I was going to suggest my normal trick in that situation:

Do it blind. Seriously :D I've done it enough times in windows to do it blind - sad but true :(

Yes, if your TV supports 1080p over component or 1920*1080 over VGA. Very few do though.

Trem, what native res is your new telly? If it is 1080, then why are you using the VGA lead if it does not support the max res. Colours also appear sharper using the component cable im my experience.

Hmmm I am thinking that Ch3t, I thought I read somewhere that VGA gives a better pic or something.

My tv is 1080p (Panasonic TH42PZ700B).

I also get a green line at the bottom of the screen using VGA.

Holy christ I don't wanna feed another Xbox lead through :(

move the screen around to centre it like you would on a crt monitor if you use vga on the panny .. i had to do that to get rid of some annoying greenblocks at the bottom of the screen

Turned out the display was off a little up and right .. once i moved it down and left all the funny blocks disappeared. :)

The pain of feeding the lead will be worth it when you have a nice lovely 1080 picture from the 360 :)

Hi, I just signed up to this forum since I was searching Google for a solution to my 'green line' problem, and found this site.

Can you tell me exactly HOW I centre the screen? There doesn't seem to be an option. Do you mean I can do it from the dashboard, or do I have to do it in each individual game?

Cheers.

I think Moriath was talking about centering the screen using the TV functions rather than on the console but maybe I have misunderstood...

Cheers guys.

So all this time I have spent with a spirit level trying to get my telly in the centre of the wall was a waste of time?

Damn you Moriath and your hidden advice

(I actually didn't know there was a centre thing on the telly)

Found it and sorted it now.

Cheers Moriath.

Mega impressed with this Panny btw, in all fairness it pisses on the Sharp from a great height but then again it is almost double the price of the Sharp.

Are you using a component cable now? Or are you being a heathen and using your tv at a lower res than it's native res?

I think its doing 1080i, quite sure my telly doesn't do 1080p via VGA, hence the reason for this thread. I am very drunk right now so I may be wrong.

Whilst I don't really think there is any noticable difference between using component and VGA to connect my 360 to my TV (I have Panasonic TX32LXD790) I DO notice a lot more vertical tearing using VGA.

Got the Panasonic TH42PZ700B beautiful looking unit and great picture. Watched Sunshine on it last night and it gave me wood :D

I have to be honest I aren't a big console player, my main reason for the Xbox 360 shenanigans is to play the 720p WMV films through it, now they look absolutely stunning.

The whole point of this thread was that his tv does NOT support 1920*1080 over vga. Very few lcd tv's actually support their native res over vga.

Apart from the fact that VGA is more washed out than component, he is feeding his panal an inferior signal and not getting the most out of his £2000 TV.

Trem, connect up via component and set it to 1080i (you can try 1080p and see if your panal supports it). Otherwise you will make me angry and I will go down the petshop, buy lots of birds and release them on your lawn.

Whilst I don't really think there is any noticable difference between using component and VGA to connect my 360 to my TV (I have Panasonic TX32LXD790) I DO notice a lot more vertical tearing using VGA.

Again it depends on the native res of your tv. If it is only a 720p panal, then you won't notice anything between vga and component assuming that the native res is supported via vga. The only difference would be the colours, they do not look as good on vga IMO.

I am getting the lead today Ch3t (need one with optical output).

On your head be it if I go into a furious rage and set fire to my telly after spending 7 hours feeding the cable through

I did try 1080p and it didn't work before.

Isn't 720p better than 1080i anyways?

Trem -the cable should come with your 360 as standard... unless you bought the core console without the harddrive? It has an optical out on the port that plugs into the 360.

and no no no no! The best res you can use on your screen is the native res of your screen. So 1920*1080 for you, or 1080(i/p). If you use 720p, then you are feeding your screen a lower res, and then your screen is upscaling that picture back to 1080.

Oh and I looked up your new tv. It does look lovely. Pics!

Oh...I didn't know that, cheers Ch3t. I bought the one with the HD.

My Xbox wouldn't let me choose 1080p in its settings thing, is there a reason for that?

You need to get an update that came out in erm, January? Hook yourxbrick up to the net and just let it update itself.
