Smith, Gers, Murray all very good.
Adrian Smith and Janick Gers' guitar "solos" at Rock in Rio on both The Trooper and Hallowed Be Thy Name. Are fucking brilliant.
For some reason Iron maiden just seem to find awesome guitarists

A few others that people haven't mentioned yet.

John Petrucci, from Dream Theater
John Williams, probably the most famous classical guitarist of all time
Herman Li, from Dragonforce. He's a super quick guitarist. I couldn't say I've heard any technically brilliant stuff from him, but it's all good fun
Eric Johnson
Frank Zappa was an awesome all round musician and a great guitarist
Johnny Winter, in the same sort of way as Jimmy Hendrix
Brian May, from Queen
John McLaughlin, from The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, from The Mars Volta

There's way to many to choose from for a top five.

LOL at the Slash vote !

Slash was good - but not one of the best. He could barely play live he was always so drunk or stoned. James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine are both better guitarists than Slash. So's Eric Clapton.

OK. I'll give you the Metallica one. But sorry, Slash is good - but he's not good enough to be in the top 5 best guitarists of the 20th century. Sticking by that comment.

Hendrix (holded his guitar upside down because he was lefthanded)

Zappa (coulded even play rifs from false played notes and no one came ever close to his play style)

Malmsteen (because i like classic music played on electric guitar)

Vai & Satriani (some songs of them are awefull while others are total crap)

Robert Fripp (King Crimson)

Petrucci

Paul Gilbert

And some others mentioned early except Clapton, cant understand what makes him a good guitar player,

Ow thats more then five...
