...according to The Economist Intelligence Unit:

1. Vancouver, Canada
2. Melbourne, Australia
3. Vienna, Austria
4. Toronto, Canada
5. Calgary, Canada
6. Helsinki, Finland
7. Sydney, Australia
8. Perth, Australia
8. Adelaide, Australia
10. Auckland, New Zealand

I've only been to four of those, but I have to say "best" seems to be a synonym for "boring". (I'd also say that until yesterday I'd have regarded Auckland as the worst place to live in New Zealand.)

NB. Highest ranked British city (at 42nd) is Manchester.

In light of current events I'd have to disagree with that :( Although they're due their own mega quake some time soon I hear.

Having worked in Melbourne for 6 months a decade ago, it's still my favourite place to have lived. Granted I was 18 and pissed most of the time...

That's why I said "until yesterday". Having said that, Wellington and Christchurch are both way nicer than Auckland. I'm with you on Melbourne, I think its far more fun than Sydney, which is pretty dull once you get past the pretty view. As for Vancouver being no.1, I can see the logic, but I found it boring as hell after just a week (rest of BC is stunning though).

I also think whoever put together this list didn't have the weather as key consideration!

Anyone working for the Economist Intelligence Unit probably includes pant sniffing as a hobby though. I doubt they would include criteria any normal person would go by. Cleanliness, transport, amenities, politeness of the local populous etc.

(Though admittedly, most UK cities would be pretty low on the list on the above four)

Most British cities would be pretty near to Sao Paulo slums on those measures.

Hey now, if you disregard the bad public transport, the shit motorway system, the traffic jams, the bad drivers, the scummy areas in South / West Auckland, it's not a bad place.

I think that the list was probably put together by an Aucklander, just to piss the rest of the country off (who hate everyone in north of the Bombay Hills).

If you're minted then obviously it's one of the big cities. Otherwise you will live a life of misery wherever you call home, frankly.

I went to toronto, it was the metropolitan equivilent of Coldplay, so much so coldplay tormented me when I was there. It was a bit gash imo.

Madness, I would rather live in York, Bath, Edinburgh and quite a few other places before even considering my hometown and even then I wouldn't bother unless financially I had to do so. Better to live outside Manchester and commute in for the social/work stuff, I certainly wouldn't live in or around the city if I could afford not to. The cock/normal person ratio is pretty fucked up here, like most working cities.

All the top ten are soulless connurbations with no distinct culture - it must be judged by Americans...

Currently living in number 9 and whilst it's nice an all that,( outside of the CBD has a shed load of parks and non vandalised play areas for the kids) after 7pm the whole place shuts down and everyone fucks off home.

Oh its also close to heaps of (clean) beaches and surrounded by vineyards. For that alone it deserves higher than 9.
