In all honesty, whilst I think the majority of stuff posted on here is shite, I'm at a complete loss as to what exactly I want to read and why I'm even here, other than the BW forums were great and I've paid a tenner.

Innit! On a regular basis i'm now considering whether to just delete FH from my favourites and forget about it. Maybe even subscribe to GameSpy while i'm at it. Atleast i'll be up to date with the gaming scene, and i wouldn't have to put up with politics and homo-erotic stories involving "Wij" and "poo flinging".

..granted, it was more alive, thing is there was 'just' as much general threads, or bullshit as you call them, but it was awash with many many people talking, today is a 'very' different kettle of fish. You can either view it as a great opportunity to build from nothing, or pull it all down with elite posting nonsense. By all means post your elite threads if needed but do not keep hassling people for just doing what they see as normal.

You really do try and create an upper class of the forums, it stinks and it doesn't go well with me, get annoyed, post crap back, I don't care tbh. Elite is no good IMO... didn't work before (long term) won't work now as a good basis.

However, i want to know where this notion of BW = Good ol' days comes from. We're forgetting that BW also had it's fucking shit moments. I clearly remember a thread by one Perplex, detailing as he did; how the forum was just mindless drivel. I dunno, maybe at the mo' it's just a phase. That said, if it keeps up, then it'll be official that FH just ain't the same.

And I'll tell you why: People get banned for the stupidest things, more than likely because Deebs etc are scared now of anything falling back on them from something posted here, which I don't blame them for (I sympathise with their situation), but resultantly a culture of fear has been, well, cultivated, where no, or very little verbal "rough-housing" occurs.

Say something that someone, even just one person doesn't like or takes exception to?

I honestly expected this thread to be closed already - that's what it's got like recently.

BW was a hell of a lot freer, because the corporation was ultimately responsible should anything "bad" happen - Ted, Deebs etc didn't have to take the flak at the end of the day - which is the only thing that has changed since BW.

Personally I think things are actually pretty relaxed around here, and the only bans are usually for 'die irl' kinda stuff which is a definite no no as there was quite a vicious trend going before.... *shrugs*

React more apathetically to moaners - people like Ala for example. As Tom said, the change over avatars was just silly now. This community (and/or the old BW community) was always an adult one - why all of a sudden are we pandering to the bleeding heart liberals to use a Moore-ism?

Whereas before they would have, quite rightly, been told to fuck off and stick their ridiculous suggestion where the sun don't shine. They were always told, "Well if you don't like it you can either turn avatars off in your CP or go post elsewhere" - we didn't change things globally to suit one or two people to the detriment of others.

Im not sure where all this has come from. Its true that a lot of posts lately have been bland but amidst the usual shite, and this existed on BW as much as it does now, you find the one or two gems that makes coming back worth while.

I do agree that the banning culture and overtly pro-PC stance has become tiresome, but all forums have these to some degree to protect us from really offensive behaviour succoured by anonimity. Im sure with the way things are going in this wonderful country of ours that there will soon be some interesting threads again.

You know, I found this thread really interesting.
I notice a certain amount of drum hating too of course, he's actually quite lucid and thoughtful and I suspect people are taking it out on him.

Anyway, as Jup says, what do you think should be done differently?
We'll never be BarrysWorld again. Those forums were for a real GSP with game servers and leagues and... well... direction. Freds lacks that direction, that gel to hold us together. In the past we bitched about what game were were into and why CS players were retards (getting into the swing again) and now we've no motivation or real direction. The DAOC crowd have their game but the rest of us dont gel together like we used to.

Should we change the CoC (and therefore the moderation as the latter is merely the implementation of the former)? Should we dump some rules, change some even *gasp* add some?

Nothing is set in stone, we can change stuff if its generally thought to be fore the good of the users of Freds. The only thing we need to do is protect Deebs and I as "the publishers" of the site so we dont get prosecuted and we also need to ensure standards are maintained. But those standards should be what the community wants and perhaps we should redefine them.

We should also consider the structure of the forums. Theres a whole bunch of forums we can ditch now, as they're unused, and perhaps we should get round to laying it out better too. Any forums we should merge? Split? Ditch? Add?
Whilst its not what it was, it still has the possibility of being something positive, I just dont think it will be the same as it used to be, ever again. If we can deal with that, work out our new direction and get on with it I dont doubt Freds can add something to our mundane existance once again.

You need to decide who your target audience are. If you want the old BW crowd then take the coc and shred it. I cannot remember there being any "rules" on BW. I can certainly remember having some fairly vicious flame wars, without any mod intervention. Cocks got banned for being cocks not for any specific rule breaking. Cage would be a good example. I saw the post by Oblong Chicken recently, I think starting a new thread was a little harsh, but the sentiment seemed reasonable. As for the avatars, well that was a bullshit decision tbh.
If you want the "Game" crowd then at least just put a warning on the registration page and tone down the coc.
I would not be unhappy if it was 18+, but then I'm old and decrepid.

Completely and utterly right as ever.

It was so much more fun when it was free reign - within reason of course - and the flames were just part of the fun. You had the occasional wanker who took it too far but for the most part it just made the forums a bit livelier and more interesting. There was drama, there were arguments, there were completely and utterly inane/banal conversations and none of that seems to happen here.

How about moving all the entertainment forums back in here so there's a few more interesting topics in General?

My favourite threads on BW were the ones that sailed very close to the wind.

Discard the CoC! Use moderation only if someone reports a thread as offensive, and even then, treat that report with a degree of distain.
