What's the deal with Rayner and her flat stamp tax? If it was a random Joe or Jane who had paid the improper amount, what would be the consequence? Just told to pay the difference? Maybe a slap on the wrist and a fine?

Ah, wrote about this in the politics thread.

Labour graft. She's known about this for ages. It's easy to figure out how much stamp you owe. I know. I had to pay it not that long ago. The only way to get around it is if you lie about your circumstances - because the conveyancing solicitors make that call for you and tell you what you owe.

That would be tax evasion - which is a criminal offence. But it's a bit wheedly, so if you made a genuine mistake, then they'll deal with it civilly and you'll pay a 10-30% fine.

But if she was taking legal advice, rather than just telling the conveyancing solicitors her exact situation, then... :)

So:

I've been following this (as much as anyone can). What will be will be - but the massive problems the defence has had to get basic access to their client, and an inability to provide the basics so they can provide for their own defence are pretty shocking.

If we can't get these basics right, how can we say any convictions we obtain are safe? This should be massively concerning for all of us.
