Why would you even have WiFi with those beliefs?

That's a bit mental.

That's like saying Bush did 9/11 but I support the war on Iraq.

True, but whacking on a billion quid's worth of debt and relying on Arcadia for all your clothes concessions didn't help.

Having said that, the last nine months have been the final nail for lots of struggling retailers; I'm not sure the UK High Street will still exist in any meaningful way by Easter.

Yup, we bought a large amount of stuff online previously, one of the largest online consumers around, even more so now.

They are on about turning one of our town centre shopping centres into flats soon, its full of card shops atm.

Until local authorities allow people to run businesses without crippling business rates in places where people can drive to and park so they can collect things then it will stay dead as well.

Why go to a store when you can order online, get stronger protections through distance selling regulations & delivery costs less than the parking and carries no risk of a traffic warden.

I rarely if ever visit my high street, overpriced and an army of traffic wardens patrolling the car parks.
A queue of 10 people waiting to punch their reg into those hideous little keypads, that are designed so most people have to uncomfortably bend over to see the tiny numbers, hoping they will make a mistake.

The people who design, purchase and fit those disgusting pieces of shit should be tattooed as the whores of satan, the day they fitted them in the car parks around here the shops reported a 50% drop in trade and its still 25% down.

Ah yes, @Job the champion of compassion who absolutely doesn't spend every waking moment trying to wind people up on the internet. Fucking hell.

People haven't needed department stores since at least 2007. Bhs, Debenhams, Beales and all the others have been falling a miserable death. Markup on some products were always ludicrous, especially when compared to online, where i don't have to move.

Ultimately the biggest factor for me was the cost of parking, and lack of parking in my area, that drove me away from the town centres.

All the failing department stores have been the mid-market players (not just in the UK, everywhere); at the higher end they are surviving (and were even doing well until COVID) because large parts of their customer base actually like the experience, "shopping as theatre". I worked in this space for a few years and while "showrooming" was a major issue (touch and feel in store and then buy cheaper online) it wasn't anything like as bad for the mid-market. One of the big reasons is most of the high ends owned their own buildings, whereas all the mid-tiers were loaded with commercial leases that gave them no escape. The landlords have signed the death warrant of their own business to a great extent.
