Hes alive and well...the courts..based on medical evidence, seized him from his parents to die in a British hospital.

I have recently adopted a dog from an animal shelter and I want to take him for a walk. I am thinking of buying a dog collar first and is torn between choosing a retractable leash or a regular one. Which do you guys prefer and why?

OK so this in in my field of expertise
By law your dog must have a collar on at all times, with your name and address etc on it. Chipping will have been checked by the adoption centre, I would hope at least. But make sure you update the details if they haven't.
A retractable lead or a long line is a very good way of teaching your dog recall. They can get a distance away but still in your control. Never use either of them with a collar! This can cause injury to the dog if they suddenly run and get to the end of the lead/line. A harness is perfect with these type of leads and I use a harness myself even when using a normal lead, it's a more comfortable way for the dog to be on lead generally. I've got a 15m long line I use from time to time.
Do not let the dog off lead until you are absolutely sure that you have recall mastered. This counts even more for a rescue dog as you don't know it's history. It may be fearful of something you don't know about yet, and piss off quick!
