Wait. What? You downloaded an encoded (probably 1080p x264) version of it (presumably without black bars because it's against the "rules" to leave the black bars in tact) and then cropped it?

What's the point buying a game as a disk, installing it, off the disk, then it demanding to go on steam for 6 hours worth of updates?

Black bars were there, most blurays are only 1920x700, because in their wisdom Hollywood decided to ignore 16:9 and letterbox everything with no option. so my Hobbit is actually only about 1280x700, but as everyone knows, it is all about bit rate not resolution.

There's a thread called "Shaved Pussy Anyone". Apparently I have insufficient priveleges to reply. I think we are all qualified to comment. Well, most of us. Yes, yes, its 11 years old. The thread not the pussy. Perverts. Go watch a Rolf Harris video.

OK, you're properly talking rubbish now, "most blurays are only 1920x700" - I've not seen a single BluRay wider than 2.4 which would be 1920x800, which coincidentally is what The Hobbit is framed at.

If you take a 1920x800 video and "crop it to 16:9" (I'm shuddering just typing that), you will end up with something like 1420x800 (without some dodgy upscaling) and you will throw away about 13% from *each side* of the video. That's over a quarter of the information lost. Then you put that on a 1080p TV and it will upscale the 800px height to fill the screen and ugh, it won't look as pretty as if you'd just left it as originally cropped. Aspect ratio first (that should be a given as it is how it is intended to be watched), then bitrate, then resolution.
