I thought the SSD size requirement was because it doesn't have driver support for lower size models?

If you are going to install windows, display drivers, hardware drivers etc on the SSD, which is what you should do. You will need more than 20 gig, end of. Plus ofc a 20 gig drive will not actually be 20 gig, probably 18 or so once installed.

Mine, which is a brand new installation as of a week before xmas is approx 40 gig. I install any other software on my D: drive (a 1tb HD)

edit. my 60 gig SSD has a maximum storage capacity of 55 gig.

It says 20gb is the minimum for a x64 install but how long is it going to stay at 20gb? Even if you install all your apps and games elsewhere and move your documents folder off your sys drive your windows installation still grows.

The daughters laptop runs Windoze 7, it has 6GB of ram, she has the usual problems of the mouse stuttering, so I checks the task manager..using 1.3 GB ram, something wrong surely..no, Advent from PC World, using 1.3GB out of the box, no programs running.
I mean really, have they no shame?

If it's a 32 bit installation then the 6 gig is pointless. Windows won't use all the memory anyway, even 64 bit at full pelt. I currently have Windows, WoW, firefox and VLC running and I am using just shy of 4 gig of memory.

Yeah I've very rarely gone over 4 GB and that's with Adobe Bridge & Photoshop, Chrome with dozens of tabs open, iTunes, WMP, Word, Steam all running.

Infact I've got all those running now and I'm sitting at 2.6 GB physical RAM utilised.

32 bit windows 7 can only use 3 gig of ram, although it should be 3.4 or 3.6 (need to check) in theory. What does it matter how much ram is used if it's not at using all of it anyway? I don't see your point

I have win7 64bit installed on a 20 gig partition, windows reports 19.2gig actual space, and 3.77 free. That is AFTER drivers. You don't need more, I also have a few programs installed in that space.

No it's 20gig MINIMUM, that includes space for drivers and the page file. Hence me still having 3.77gig free space after a install plus drivers and a few other bits.

But only if you disable hibernation and either make your pagefile tiny or move it to a slow drive.

what? I have done none of those things. Instead of telling me why it's not possible, when I've done it and am using it, why not try it yourself before spouting BS?

Because the page file will (by default) be 1.5x your physical memory and be stored on your boot drive. The hibernation data will be approx 10-15 gig and also be stored on your boot drive.

Why the anger? Blob week?

Edit. It may well function differently on partitioned drives, but we are not talking about partitioned drives. We are talking about physically seperate boot drive and data drive.

What anger?

Also I have not made my pagefile tiny have I? I've simply left it at default.

I've not disabled hibernation, if it takes that much space then I guess it won't work, but I've not disabled it....

Are you going to tell me how poor the performance of my system will be because I'm only using the minimum space for an install next?

So you are saying you do not have a hibernation file or page file on your boot drive? and have therefore either moved them yourself or got someone else to do so either when they built/configured the machine or set it up for you? Confused.... It would be pretty silly to not use a pagefile at all! and goodluck using hibernation without a hibernation file! (Which is on in a default installation) Obviously it can be disabled if you wish.

By default both files appear on the bootdrive and that space will be used by them, ergo, 20 gig is not big enough for a default installation.

Yet I've not disabled either.... Oh someone has built for me now have they? No I've not moved them. The default is not pagefile off, please keep making more assumptions.

I didn't say the default was off...did I?

Some further reading for you...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging
Windows NT

In NT-based versions of Windows (such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7), the file used for paging is named pagefile.sys. The default location of the page file is in the root directory of the partition where Windows is installed. Windows can be configured to use free space on any available drives for pagefiles. It is required, however, for the boot partition (i.e. the drive containing the Windows directory) to have a pagefile on it if the system is configured to write either kernel or full memory dumps after a crash. Windows uses the paging file as temporary storage for the memory dump. When the system is rebooted, Windows copies the memory dump from the pagefile to a separate file and frees the space that was used in the pagefile.[11]

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/819-hibernate-enable-disable.html

By default in Windows 7, the size of the hidden protected OS hibernation file (C:\hiberfil.sys) will be the same as the amount of installed RAM on your computer.

If you didn't move them then you either disabled them both or moved them to a separate partition/drive. Edit. They are both hidden files so you may not know they are there.

Please continue to make more assuptions and so on.

I've told you I've left it as default, that means I have not moved them. So why are you trying to insist I've somehow fiddled with the settings? Jesus you really cannot admit that you might be wrong about how much space win7 needs can you.

My hiberfil.sys file is 2.99 gb for your information. My pagefile will be whatever the default is, I'll check next time I boot into it and take you a nice screenshot to stop you inane rambling.

There's no point getting 6gb of dual-channel, unless they started making it in 3gb sticks. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 is the way to go. You needed 3 sticks of tri-channel (ie 3x2gb) to take full advantage of the tri-channel tech on the older LGA-1366 chipset (1st gen i7) and now you need an even number of dual-channel on the newer LGA-1155.

Having more ram is not going to hurt Lamp, not sure of prices at the moment though. With DDR 3 is it still best to buy ram in matched pairs? In that case surely 8 gig would be better than 6?

I've realised the new post rating system is missing a patronising prick button, it would be quite handy for Raven's posts today.

No, because I am not wrong. Why would I say I am wrong just to please you? Read the provided links. If they are not in the default installation location then the setting have been changed.

Arguing with you is hardly being patronising, remove your head from your arse.

Any guitar dudes got any decent links/resources to some blues type stuff to learn? I've always fucked around with learning song tabs but feel I should be learning scales etc and so on and heard the blues is a good place to start.

Thx!

Anyone ever done those psychometric (or something..) tests they make you do for some job applications? The online ones with the time limit.

I just did one. The fire alarm went off twice. The same person phoned me repeatedly on my mobile. They then phoned on the house, which someone else answered and kept shouting up the stairs at me. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
