I wanna design my own case but I'm not the arty type and can't use CAD or anything like that.

My last motherboard was the Asus Maximus 1 - excellent range of motherboards.

Looks good to me, except my personal preference is a Radeon graphics card, not sure there is a lot of difference though.

One of the P8Z68's would be my choice - you get more for your money than with the Maximus boards, they are tailored more towards oc'ing. The Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 will do just fine imo.

How much is that system setting you back lamp, looks nice

Err that particular set up was slightly more than I want to pay - around the £2k mark. I reckon I could cut back on the Intel chipset; pick a cheap case; 16GB RAM is probably overkill; I reckon 4 is more than enough for my needs, and I reckon I could cut back on the graphics chip set, and maybe lose the 120GB SSD. That would probably knock off £500. I am seriously tempted to upgrade the speakers to Logitech Z5500 THX Ce3rtified 5.1's - truly amazing speakers

I'd get 8gb of RAM personally- I don't think it's very expensive is it?

Well you definitely don't want less than 8GB when running Windows 7 but 16GB is pretty much a waste as you'll never use it all unless its for AV Editing. Remember that most games still only use 2-3GB at most so anything left is basically an expensive disc cache.

I'm getting the impression Windows 7 is very bloaty? system intensive? (you need 8 GB RAM min to run it, a 60GB SSD to boot it up). It had better be fecking amazing...otherwise I'll stick with XP Pro tyvm

Nah was just wondering as it's very similar to what im thinking of getting except i would settle with 8gb ram a decent 1gig card and a high end i5 processor instead

Not gonna get much change out of £1500 (unless you buy the parts & build it yourself ofc)

Win7 isn't bloaty in the slightest imo, it runs like shit off a shovel compared to Vista and uses less resources (although I haven't done a direct comparison on the same system) and uses those resources more intelligently (apparently).

Windows 7 64 bit is pretty damn good imo. I'm using it with 6GB RAM and I work with 100+ MB TIFFs in Photoshop no bother.

Meh, I've only got 2Gb in mine and it runs no problem at all. Even runs Skyrim on high settings. Though it probably helps that I've got a 6Gb Pagefile...

I've got it running on a 6 year old VAIO that only just meets the minimum reqs, it's fine as long as you turn all the fanciness (namely Aero) off. I recently put a SSD and an extra gb of RAM in it (up to 2) and it's perfect for what I want (tethered capture, some pretty undemanding image editing etc).

Yeah but seriously no harm in going for 8gb. And they're practically paying you to take it away atm (compared to what I paid for 6gb about a year ago anyway) so I would go for at least 8gb.

I agree there, go for the 8Gb, even if you don't need it all the time at least it'll be there when and if you do. Just remember to use Win7 64bit, 32bit can only use a maximum of 4Gb.

3 isnt it? But I doubt anyone bothers with 32 bit these days. You get both with win 7.

It's not bloaty at all and your figures are wrong. I run win7 32 bit on a laptop with 1 gig ram, and it flies along. You need a minimum of 2 gig for the 64bit version. Also I'm am pretty certain a win7 OS install only needs 20gig of space.
