But it's highlighted how stupidly cold my front bedroom is. The exterior wall has no insulation, a tiny ickle cavity, and is cold as fuck. The bathroom with all its insulation is like an oven now, so once I've finished this, I'm tearing the bedroom apart.

I don't have a rat issue with 4 chickens and 7 guinea fowl.

Number 1: Keep your food secure (metal bin will do).
Number 2: Feed (and water) suspended above ground in the chicken run.

We dangle a 3lt feeder from the roof of the run on some string and fill it with food (same for water). That keeps the food protected and off the floor. No vermin.
