Difficult subject but no imo. that would never be OK. The rest of the world pretty much cut down their forests for industry, farms and housing or in Spain's case an Armada of ships ;). Why should Brazil pay the consequences for everyone else's mistakes. If the world wants to Brazil to keep the forest as conservation areas we should pay them to do so.

Problem is that if we did send money to Brazil to preserve the rain forests, it'd only stay within the highly corrupt Government, it won't help the millions of people that are encroaching on the rain forest for farm land.

Plus, if we went down that road we'd probably get invaded ourselves, for doing the same to Canada's forests so we can burn them in Drax.

Fair point and that would have to be overseen by some reputable body, making sure sure the money is spent to the conditions applied when giving it. So, obviously not the UN then as all the money would just go to their overpaid management teams ;)

An environmental body ran as a Greenpartygarchy with the world's green parties running it.

Im glad theres no one here whos a climate warrior and invests in bitcoin.

Bitcoin mining could cancel out climate change efforts, scientists say | CBC News

Energy consumption is going to increase anyway, it's inevitable - it's why I find arguments such as 'if everyone made sure they didn't leave their lights on we'd save the planet!' laughable.

It's not about our consumption it's about finding alternative ways of gaining that energy.

But it's far too profitable not to find alternatives :)

Well electricty is only a small part of world energy consumption.
Thats why turbines and solar only contribute about 2% of world energy needs.

Would it be viable to invade places where jungle and rainforest is mistreated and conserve them by force? It would be for everyones best interest.

The most probable outcome is that market forces will stop them chopping too much of it down, much in the same way no matter what Trump does the US isn't about to starting using vast quantities of coal.

The Amazon is the poster boy for carbon sink, but that doesnt really make any sense, they call.it the 'lungs of the planet' in reality all plant life produces oxygen...scientists are still arguing if its actually a sink or a net producer.
Phytoplankton produce 85% of the Earths oxygen.
The Amazon produces a tiny amount of o2 levels, its just a lot prettier and trendy that plankton.

Wasn't there a thing about how much the ocean contributes?

Either way I do think we should try and prevent it being destroyed.

It has many impacts on the environment, it's interesting how everyone talks about 'saving the planet' but ignoring the hundreds of species being wiped out.

Sorry, but your last comment is bullshit. Most of the big Oil and Gas companies are balls deep in renewables right now, and if we transition across to them they will make just as much money out of those instead. Add in all the subsidy farmers covering the landscape with windmills and and unhinged lunatic thinking the world's problems can be solved with batteries (lol) and it's fair to say, the next energy source we go for will be just as profitable as the current ones.

Of course, there's a really easy way to provide lots and lots of lovely carbon free energy perfectly safely, but the greenies aren't too hot on nukes so we're stuck with useless windmills and toxic solar panels. Yay!

Ah fuck it. I'm off to burn some dine juice.

If that was the case then we would have switched over a long time ago - why would you stop drilling for oil when it's infinitely cheaper than the alternatives - the big Oil and Gas companies are only doing green initiatives to cover their back, so IF a Government ever gets the balls to actually tell them to go green then they will have a plan B.

Nothing is inevitable apart from death and taxes. One overlooked factor is efficiency, which is why Scandinavian countries in particular have managed to keep energy consumption more or less flat in the last 30 years, despite the massive increase in electrical appliances.

Princess:

I really do hope the courts laugh the case out.

I'm sure there's plenty of anti-airport/business knee-jerk outrage though! Good ol' BBC publishing pointless reactionary articles.

Taxi driver sacked 'for refusing poppies'

Probably a Muslim dude.

The Taxi company probably got bombarded on Twitter/Facebook by all those right wing people that hate sharia law because it stops being free, but YOU MUST SUPPORT THE ARMY!!!!!!!!!!
He was sacked for not telling them he hadnt made the delivery.
He has every right to not deliver them..his taxi.
As a wider issue, you might question his motives...maybe anti war?
Probably not, but Im pretty sure he hangs around with a lot of people who share his views.
