It is partially. Smaller creatures(yes even in humans), dont' naturally go against bigger threats. Something has flipped that mainly defenseless(don't read it as "aww poor baby", simply fact) kid into this.

When I was at school a lot of the worst kids were smaller than everyone else. I guess it was a minor case of small man syndrome

A similar thing happened at my school also. A group of lads had been bullying another lad, he was deemed a little slow but I guess back then there wasn't the support system at schools there is now to help kids like him out. One day when they were calling him names and pushing him around he just snapped, picked up a piece of broken fence and battered the fuck out of the kid in front of him. While he was down he spat in his face and told him if they ever even looked at him the wrong way again he would rape him

Kinda weird really and I doubt I'll ever forget it, the kid never had any problems for the rest of school. I imagine he was just so sick of it something snapped.

Yes but generally those smaller guys are backed up and egged on by a large group of mates and the bigger kid tends to be all alone, and less likely to fight back incase everyone else gets involved
