Yep.

Where did you get that the "EU" released it as "propaganda" from @Job?

Wow. Lack of basic maths ability much.

Edit: Was going to leave it at that but consider these variables:

A 1500-year age range across the trees.
~70% of them
In just 0.0048% of the age that they're on the planet - the last twelve years.

What are the chances of losing 70% of these trees in such a small time window to "natural" causes?

Answer: Pretty fucking slim.

Further edit: It'd be like 70% of your friends all dying within four months of each other. From "natural" causes.

Yeah, right.

Looks like they drew the short end of the stick. The rest are in grove danger. We need to get to the root of this problem.. Does anything spring to mind?

Oh well, I'm logging off.

Definitely worth making cheap (bad) jokes about, in the background context of the earth losing half of it's animal population in the last forty years.

Like the article says - if we lost half the animals in london zoo it'd be front page news. But it's half of all animals everywhere, and we blink and move on.

What the fuck is wrong with humans? Why does the default response to this sort of news seem to be like Moriath's bizzare denial of the obvious above? You don't need the maths to explain the bayobab conundrum - it is so obvious that there's something incredibly wrong there.

Hilarious.
They think its climate change...but they have no evidence whatsoever.
That pretty well sums up the CC bogeyman.

I don't see why you have a problem with a perfectly stated hypothesis that they said they'd like to do more research to verify?

"We suspect that the demise of monumental baobabs may be associated at least in part with significant modifications of climate conditions that affect southern Africa in particular," said the team, led by Dr Adrian Patrut of Babes-Bolyai University in Romania. "However, further research is necessary to support or refute this supposition."

Perfectly reasonable response by a rational human, trying to figure out what's causing the deaths, or flat out twattery by a useless boffin "expert"? You decide eh @Job?

Of course but just like the distortion of truth Im prattling on about..Climate change is the first port of call when people cant be arsed checking anything else..and by sheer numbers becomes the defacto reflection of percieved 'horrible man against nature' rhetoric.
There are far, far bigger things to worry about in Africa...a million a week pop increase and the resultant habitat shrinkage for the ecology.
I would take a leap and say thats more likely a major factor in tree deaths...some predator prey balance us being upset by human activity.

What a twat. Yeah, there's less lions, so the trees are dying.

Bayobab trees are weirdly more responsive to big shaggy manes being seen regularly within a 50 mile radius, rather than water and temperature, like all other plants on the planet.

And are easy to visually check for.

Do you think these people are fucking idiots? If it was that, they'd see it straight away.

But they are very strange trees...and no one knows they are diseased until they fall down..completely rotted inside.
Im sure investigations are ongoing..doesnt stop the Guardian posting the article under climate change.

It was the BBC, not the Guardian. Nothing was posted under "climate change" - it was in the science and the environment section. And the actual scientist said he wanted to do more research to find out if it was related - or not.

Yet you're whining on about it because it *may* be related to climate change. Your knuckles must actually be worn completely away by now.

Did searching for the story on the guardian and pretending that you'd come to it separately make you feel a little better?
