Just had a buffet at work, plates were made out of banana leaves that had been moulded then dried. Brilliant idea.

Had to go into town this morning. Real eye opener the amount of homeless people in doorways. Gave an old boy selling big issue a tenner and ignored the rest but fucks sake are there not hostels they can go to?!

Hardly worth it if people keep giving them tenners in the street.

You're going to call me a fairy for saying it - but Tories, again. Obvs.

When I first moved to Nottingham the amount of homeless people was astonishing. Wall-to-wall. Gradually over the years of the Labour administration they almost completely disappeared. Maybe if you spent the whole day in town you'd meet one or two selling a big issue, but generally not.

Since 2010 there's been a steady increase and now they're back to the same levels they were when I first moved in. Homeless everywhere. I guess funding for hostels or other places they can go in the day dries up under Tory rule. Because, you know, Tories - it's probably the homeless people's fault because they're fucking lazy, right?

I've never actually seen anyone give paper money to a homeless person. I've seen 50p or £1 thrown in their general direction, occasionally...

Both you and Raven are using poetic license, beggars do very well, especially ones with puppies, that's why they are there.
in a day , 20K people will pass a beggar in a busy street, if 0.1% give them a quid, there's £200 a day.
You could stay in a hotel every night.

Lots of homeless are more scared of the hostel than they are of the street, and on the flip side, the safer hostels are “dry” (no drugs, no booze) which puts off others. In smaller towns there’s only likely to be one hostel, and it’ll be one or the other. Either way, the upshot is a subset of the homeless who won’t go indoors.

Homeless problem is ramping up big time in Dublin. It used to be a tiny handful of people when I first moved here; it’s thousands now. There’s a couple of fellas sleeping rough near us now (one camps out in a car park behind the chippy, the other I have no idea as I only see him during the day), and I live in a very middle class village. The nearest hostel is probably ten miles away. However, we can’t blame the Tories over here...

Once again you demonstrate you know fuck all. While the Daily Express may consider all rough sleepers to be professional beggars (which you obviously believe), the real story is that most rough sleepers have a wide range of needs that aren't catered for by our government - mental illness ranking very high on the chart.

Rough sleepers and complex needs | Crisis | Together we will end homelessness

But obviously you've fallen for the tabloid headlines. You probably also believe that benefit scroungers cost our country more than tax evaders.

All disposable stuff should be banned.

Edit: as in party plates, plastic cutlery etc. at such events

Ive always said its a mental health issue and because I say it can be a nice little earner doesnt mean that I think they are all scammers.
But if you bothered to investigate, like anything, begging suffers from the dog eat dog of territories, pimping and general infighting for top spots.
If theres money to be made you can bet what the simplistic liberal mind sees as he passes a scruffy person is not the reality.
Just throw scraps at birds by the beach and youll see what homelessness and begging are all about.

I saw it as "kid in budget jumper"

Lots of bored people got offended by it, for whatever reason.

I'm no Bill Oddie, but that isn't a Robin.
I do get a Robin being very friendly as I work in our garden though. They learn quick that you uncover food for them.

Not keen on the new Guardian branding; it’s very “generic newspaper site”. The old identity was much more distinctive.
