Holy fuck balls.
Wwhat you prefer someone to ge tbeaten up, or murdered, or some other crime they could be preventing instead of making dinner and washing up? There are people there to look after kids in that situation. Not police

In some ways I agree with you @Moriath but the police are not robots, they need to do humanitarian stuff too to keep their sanity. And so what if they were off the streets for an hour or two? I doubt it makes that much difference. I doubt the violent crime rate in NL is that high. And it builds a lot of goodwill for the police, which is also important.

I should get some kind of award for the most fragmented paragraph ever written for the above post...

Don't be a cock, I'm sure they were on call if needed.

My dad was a police inspector and they were always complaining how they were having to be part social worker and taking them away from their real jobs.

Not being a cock just relaying what police think of having to offer social service instead of police work.

I'd sooner have police which were.. human.

I'd sooner have a police force which weren't completely caught up in a system which made them into patrolling robots which have have 0 empathy for other humans.

It's funny that you say that really, due to government cuts on the Police Force, statistics such as 'how did we do today?! :)' have gone up with the Police, which the Government considers a success, and people are saying they have a great experience with the police after they've been mugged/burgled/attacked. Meanwhile, burglaries/muggings/attacks are going up.

So in reality (Your post being the ideal of what they SHOULD be doing), I'd rather have a police force which spends a couple of hours helping some kids out who must be absolutely shit scared because their mum has been rushed into hospital rather sitting behind a desk, filling out endless reports on how someone has been burgled.

Don't get me wrong, there is an incredible amount of wastage in the police, just like any public service. They have years of lefty bollocks to get rid of before they can become an efficient "thing" again. Institutionalised red tape and so on...but it doesn't hurt to show a bit of humanity now and again.

We remove red tape, and do what? - Get them back on the streets looking bad ass 24/7?

Balance the time out, win back the respect of the people, it's no longer just yout's who dislike the Po-po, a lot of people do, hearts & minds.

Doesn't have to be big things such as spending time out of your day, just don't stand there looking like a prick;

Err... actually doing something, rather than writing about doing something.

Having the respect of the people is completely different from bureaucracy. Being seen to actually be around preventing crime is better than writing umpteen forms out for every single little thing. There was quite a commotion in the village this week because some police were seen walking around the village...not happened in years.

If you wanted to rob a house around here you would know you have a 30 minute window from being spotted to a copper actually turning up.

I meant when you break down the red tape, what do you do with those extra resources? - Do what looks good on paper, get them out there preventing crime, or get them talking to locals and actually communicating with people?

I know people will say 'Well yeah, their job is to prevent crime'

What about soldiers? - the vast majority of their job in recent conflicts has been talking to locals - hearts & minds - why doesn't it apply on our own soil?

It does, but you don't win hearts and minds from behind a desk is some town centre police station, you do it on the beat, in the community.

Lets not.

Paper work bollocks helps nobody. being out and about in the community both prevents crime and means criminals are brought to justice quicker.

WE FUCKING AGREED WITH EACH OTHER AND YOU'RE STILL GOING ON

I JUST SAID THAT WE NEED TO STOP WITH THE RED TAPE TO GET POLICE BACK ON THE STREETS PREVENTING CRIME, BUT ALSO THEY NEED TO FOCUS ON BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE PEOPLE THAT THEY'RE 'PROTECTING'

YOU'RE A CUNT

I HATE YOU

Well they don't seem too pissed off about doing a bit of social work in this case do they? I'm sure it was their choice.

20% of the Police budget goes on pensions, which kinda sums up a lot, fuck the next generation while we roll in it.

...and what do you suggest they do about their pension liabilities?

Its not a situation unique to the police.

Next debate; how do we survive the demographics of our nation with the welfare state?

I don't think we can.

It's a seriously fucked up situation classic catch 22 - the amount of older people is increasing so we need more workers to make up for this - what do we do? Have more children bring in more migrants to cover this - problem is that these people also get older.

Living wage? - Hah!

I have a friend who worked for 4 years in a olds people home on an apprenticeship wage, an apprenticeship for an old peoples home, an apprenticeship that was meant to last for 6 months.

I don't think the living wage will happen.
