Well the last bit kinda means that in itself, the belief in god(all the hope, strength, etc involved) is the force that feeds the people the hope, strength and such, and thus the belief in itself provides what the people hope to gain from god.

So the belief is the god.

Yep much clearer. And yes, agreed. A belief in God provides people with the comfort needed to get thru life's challenges, and when that works for good, people say "God is in all of us".

You´re taking a pill that´s supposed to have a certain power/effect. And while it´s actually just a piece of candy, you feel that nonexistant effect due to autosuggestion.

But if someone draws power from the belief, it's actually working and there is an effect.

Say an example; someone prays to god for strength to get through a rough patch in life. The prayer gives the strength to do so.

So if the belief is the god, and the belief works, then surely it's not a placebo, just a misdefinition

I still don´t see the difference, because palcebos actually *do* work. They just don´t work for the reason people think.

Let´s scale it down a bit.
Someone believes in God and he eats altar bread. Now in his opinion, this bread is sacred and provides him with a special blessing, power, satisfaction... whatever. And because his belief actually *does* give him what he´s looking for, the power of the bread is working. Isn´t that a placebo?

You get people who see Christ's image on a rock, a piece of material, someone's arm, and suddendly they become venerated as icons, and people from the village want to touch it as its holy, even though its just a weather mark, a water mark, a birth mark whatever. Same as with Holy Sacriment. People believe its this, or that, and to them it is that thing. Same as a placebo. You believe this pill will cure depression, actually the pill is just harmless sugar, and your body cured itself.

Quite and i get what you're saying Thorwyn, but in this case the belief is working right? The belief gives strength(etc). The belief is not a placebo and as i theorized, the belief IS the god. So the god may be a placebo in the common conception, but in this instance what i meant, god = belief = god, there's no placebo as there's only the belief. Get what i mean?

Do note that i'm not disputing your "god is a placebo" comment, just that i didn't mean my post as such.

Ok, so in your pov, it´s a self fulfilling construct. Interesting approach, reminds me of the Focault Pendulum by Eco, where he basically said that as soon as an idea is being expressed, it somehow eventually becomes reality.
