Old git advice coming, feel free to disregard everything that follows . Parties are for meeting people, fortunately you will have already met a few as the party is for a colleague at work. Remember three things 1) have fun, probably the most difficult thing but the most important. 2) do not get so drunk that you pass out before 10 pm, infact if you don't drink much have a glass of lemonade and pretend it has voddie in it, follow dys's advice with regard to sprinkling the alcohol intake with soft drinks when you feel shit faced approaching. 3) thank your hostess before you leave, and make sure you speak to as many people as you can so your 'party invitation' probability increases and you can have some more practice.

Arrive late! this is very important! Never ever arrive to a party ontime, unless its on a bus that travels around town whilst you get pissed so you'll need to be on time to catch it.

If you arrive on time, nobody else but the loser type people will be there. Also, the later you arrive, the more pissed they'll be. so less people will notice you really. Mans drink.....well really you cant go wrong with a beer, thou I dunno about the UK but out here its acceptable to drink a womans drink e.g. bacardi breezer. Stay clear of cocktails, womans drink. Dont think "martini, shaken not stirred" is cool either, its not. Dont wear a suit. Jeans and a smartish shirt should do, smart shoes as well.

final tip: try not to get drunk before anyone else does, if you do everyone notices what a twat you act like. try to be at the halfway mark. Being the last person to get drunk isnt fun either as it means the time of having fun is nearly over. People may offer you cigarretes or try to get you to smoke. If you smoke already. this is good. If you dont smoke, say you've given it up. People may also ask: "how many did you smoke?" or "whats your favourite brand?" i prefer to favour this with a 1 pack, dunhills, response. Nobody smokes dunhills as their tar sprinkled with straw, rather than malbaro lights which is straw sprinkled with tar.

You will most likely try to be sensible about how much you drink, but it usually goes something like this... "One more won't hurt. I've already had a few, and I'm not feeling that bad". This slowly turns into "I don't really care how drunk I am"

Just make sure you eat properly before you go, and you should be fine.
A real meal, and then half a packet of prawn crackers should mean the drink doesn't go straight to your head.

And for the love of god - don't get sick in public.... I did at my first party, happend 18 months ago, and people still make jokes about it
(ok, so it happend "exactly" at the time my cousin started singing, and it was sorta projectile spew, going about a meter and a half in a pretty arc)

Basically, to survive a party, you need to remember one thing: get wasted. Drink enough and everything is funny, you have all the confidence in the world, and you just do what the hell you want and everyone loves you for it.

To sum this up quickly:
- smoking is unhealthy. Don't smoke to be cool.
- drinking is a perfectly fine thing to do to appear cool.

Those people suggesting don't get wasted clearly wouldn't survive a university party, not at St Andrews anyway. People have been thrown out of parties I've been at before now for being too sober. If someone offers you a ciggy, I'd recommend saying yes in all honesty. If you're not going to be a smoker, you'll find it tastes foul and makes you feel like shit, in which case you'll never try them again. But at least you'll have tried them, and will be in a position to lecture others about smoking. If you have never tried a cig, and try lecturing me about smoking you will get several facefuls of smoke and maybe a sweary word or two. Anyway I digress.

A good dress code if you will for a party is hoody, jeans and trianers. You will never ever go wrong unless Black Tie was stipulated in advance. But surely you've been outside often enough to notice what other people your age are wearing?

If you detect an interested female, go for it. You need to learn the art of drunken party pulls at some point - your first party is probably your best starting point. Clearly don't letch over every woman there, but if you seem to have a good rapport going with one particular female - go for it. You will regret it far more if you do nothing than if you do something then Emile it.

Above all - enjoy yourself and try not to come home without at least one souvenir from the night. Suggestions include Traffic cones, road signs, those bollards round roundabouts, an article of ladies clothing or crabs.
