from ananova:

Yasser Arafat and his top advisers huddled at his office in Gaza City, watching the events unfold on television.

He said: "We are completely shocked. It's unbelievable. We completely condemn this very dangerous attack, and I convey my condolences to the American people, to the American president and to the American administration, not only in my name but on behalf of the Palestinian people.

In the West Bank, meanwhile, the leader the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine denied his group was involved in the attacks.

Yeah, just saw the news the muslim quarter of Palestine celebrating.

It's amazing that so much hatred can be built up between people of this world.

I HAVE TO CAVEAT THE ACCUSATIONS ON THIS THREAD BY STATING THAT NO GROUP HAS COME FORWARD YET.

It could be anyone; the muslim extremists, the anti-capital terros, anyone!

Read the news properly, allegations like this help noone.
THe Iraqi's claim to have shot down a US spy plane, they even have pictures of it.

What would a US passanger plane be doing in an Iraqi military no-fly zone?

Hmmm... hard to say who:

Palestine group - maybe, they have enough anger to do it (bearing in mind that the US have been taking sides in a war where both Palestine and Isreal may or may not be committing genocide)

Anti-Caps - More likely to be honest, bearing in mind the targets.

What you must remember, depending on how the attack was orchestrated is that suicide bombers needed to be got into the country, if it was Americans they are of course already there.

Bear in mind also, that at the time of the Oklahoma bomb everyone looked ot the east, but it was one of their own.

This will need a lot of retrospect.

Whoever said it was right though - you cant attack a country because this is not a government endorsed (or at least not yet) issue - terrorists may as well be void of nationality.
The only people you have to get are the ring leaders. Which isnt impossible, but it would take years.

This isn't the style of anti-capitalists - they try, as much as possible, to present themselves as a large movement, not a small number of extremists. Could be anyone. Americans tend to think differently, and don't tend to suicide, so my money is on the Middle East...
But it is could be anyone atm.

It's hard to believe even he had the capability to do this. No point in guessing. With the number of people who must have been involved some clues must come out. I'd rather wait for evidence.

He will feature heavily in early speculation about responsibility for todays attack....

Probably similar to mine... that what happened today is an absolute tragedy, but pointing the finger at the moment is a bit premature.

There will be dozens of claims and counter-claims of responsibility over the next few days, weeks or even months, purely because pulling off something as devastating as this would be seen as major kudos for those people who make an enemy of the US (ie many many countries).

What you've got to remember is that wherever these people come from, they are terrorists - they do not represent the people of any particular nation. No doubt the fingers will point straight at the Middle East, but even if it does turn out to be the source of the attackers it is not fair to brand whole countries or the entire "arab" world as the aggressor - the vast majority would have and did have nothing to do with it. It would be as ridiculous as blaming Ireland as a country for the acts of the IRA and other terrorist organisations. Unfortunately, the average western citizen uneducated in the history of the area will do exactly that (ie see frankie's ridiculous post). As someone said above, terrorists might as well renounce any claims to nationality - in fact, a BBC reporter said something very interesting earlier, which was that if it does turn out to be Islamic Fundamentalists who committed these acts, the all too frequent mistake is to equate Islamic to Arab, when in fact that is not the case. It is not a question of country or race.

As for the people celebrating in Jerusalem, this is indeed very sad. If you view the matter from their perspective, however, you can start to see some understanding of it. These people see the United States as almost entirely responsible for the decimation of their nation, the seizing of their homes and properties, and their expulsion and exile from the country. What you've got to remember is that they will see today's actions as exactly what they were intended to be - a demonstration of power, a symbol. They do not connect the deaths of the people with the deaths of real human beings much as themselves, they are just the deaths of "the enemy". Turn it around for a second - how often do you think what a tragic loss it is that the 500+ Palestinian civilians have lost their lives in the past 5 months in the Middle East. And they are not even the enemy to us, perhaps more worryingly, they are just a statistic.

The saddest thing is that, as in every country in the world, a tiny minority of fundamentalists can destroy the lives of millions of "normal" people. And that subsequent generations of people are brought up to know nothing other than revenge and hatred - it's not a surprise, then, that the cycle can't be broken.

My views are:

a) It's not a palestinian, or indeed arab related attacking

b) It's a Taliban/Afghanistan related incident, orchestrated by Bin Laden

c) Afghanistan is not an arab country (for the moew naive ones out there)

d) it's a disaster

e) it's impressive on a planning, logisitics and pure balls out guts sort of way

f) Bush might realise he can't be a total wanker, but then again, he has the average IQ of a chimp anyway

It is highly unlikely that anyone from the floors at which the planes made contact up to the top of the building would have even survived the explosion, and resulting internal building collapse (not the big final collapse of each tower)

Add to that the next 20 or so floors below the impact points too

Perp, on the one that was hit lower down, there was camera footage of people above where it hit at the windows waving their shirts & blouses & stuff to try to get attention... people on the other side of the building were jumping...
