getting very tired of the lefties whining about absolutly everything. yeah it was a horrible thing that happened in WW2 but move on for fucks sake.
All this PC crap is just making it worse. public services have a quota for how many black people they have to employ then get whined at for not having x% of thier work force from ethnic minoritys, surely the jobs should go to the best people for the job, not just because they have to have a particuler amount of people from different backgrounds.

A little insensitive imo. Try telling that to a Holocaust survivor "Sorry, you whining lefty, can you stop going on about your family getting gassed. Get over it".

actually no, you cant have "free speech" in some areas and then say no you cant do that in others,
what you are saying is it should be removed just because it offends jews, when there are alot of other mediums where every race and creed is ripped to shit such as South Park.
You either have freedom to say whatever you like, or you dont. There is no middle ground

Like i said before, its quite pathetic how weak peoples values are nowdays

MAybe some people remember hitler as something else as well.

It's not like it was ALL about killing jews and having parties.

But, that's ofcourse wrong thinking 'cause Hitler was such a bad bad man.

ah finally this guy is talking sense :p why didnt you do this all the time in the past? :(

no one has really given a good argument yet why this shouldnt be allowed.

"its insensitive" - so is everything else we do in life but no one really gives a fuck about that. having christians ram shit down my throat that i cant bone a slut before im married or i will goto hell. i find that insensitive, because what they are telling me is im worthless.

"its offensive" - jesus, everything is offensive these days isnt it. dont say black board, dont say brain storm, dont wave a st george flag, dont say "black person". what can you say and do these days?

"the place is using hitler and the swastika to make money in the wrong way" - why does no one remember hitler didnt only kill thousands of people. maybe some of you should go get a history lesson or read wikipedia.

"the jews dont like it" - heck, do the jews like anything? apart from blow jobs and pieces of gold ofc. if one set of people dont like something does that mean it shouldnt exist anymore? :-\

oh come on lamp, its a fucking joke dude (the bit about BJs and pieces of gold).

can you explain why its out of order? it just seems a general trend here - if people dont like something they just say they dont, but dont explain it.

why isnt this guy out of order for making a reference type joke to how people were gassed?

because its a joke

Worst fecking arguement I've ever read in my life.
You think he choose Hitler because he admired his economic policies?
He deliberately choose a high contentious and devisive figure to create publicity.
Naming a restuarant after a genocidal maniac is crass and insensitive to say the least.

Having said that.
As Walter said in a film
"Trash has the right to be trash"
If it was a restaurant near me, I'd just vote with my pocket and stay away from it, if others feel comfortable to go there, thats between them and their conscience.

as we both dont know for sure exactly why he named it, we can only both speculate. but to name it that is surely going to do the opposite of get people there.

We could ofcourse get into the whole argument about if Hitler was genocidal or not...

Since it's not just "Oh my, i think i'll kill all the jews today." and done with.

But that would be rather pointless because...

Some people here are completely ignoring the symbolic value. By opening a bar with the name Hitler's cross, you associate Hitler and nazism (and thus the holocaust) with something acceptable and even enjoyable (going out for dinner). References to cruel things do not belong in such an environment.

Also, to support Aiteal's argument: He named it Hitler's cross. Not Hitler the failed artist, not Hitler's full-employment politics, but Hitler's cross. Saying that it refers to anything but nazism is silly.

Well he gave his reason in the article

Just like Hitler wanted to conquer the world, I want to conquer at least my area through the food served in my restaurant."

Ofcourse we can have reminders about people doing horrible things, but do you really think the jews enjoy being reminded of what happened in WW2?

Its not illegal, and I dont care that much myself, but I got no idea what the surviving jews and their families have gone through!

If the place was called Holocaust Burger or Gas Chamber Deli, THEN it would be about the thousands of jews killed in the WWII.

Now it's just a name of one of the leaders of one of the sides in WWII.

It's only because Hitler lost and history is written by conquerors that Hitler is somehow the frontfigure of holocaust and such.

but without a direct quote from him saying why he named it that, we really dont know. the argument really is - is it wrong to name it that.

Perhaps he is the frontfigure for the holocaust because he was the unquestioned leader of the regime that perpetrated it?

History is written by the victors yes.
Hiroshima is glossed over as is the bombing of Dresden, but that does in no way lessen the crimes of Hitler and the Nazis.

Well "crimes" is a debatable issue and should be taken to another thread sadly.

But even if Hitler was the leader, it doesn't mean he should take the full force and mudsling of it. As we all very well know, leaders are rarely, fully, the reason for actions.

But, to keep on topic, i wonder if people would be at all disgusted at:

Isokoru Yamamoto Burgers

or

Truman Deli

Anyone?

Hitler most certainly isn't the only one responsible for these crimes, but this isn't about real responisibility, it is about symbols. Whether you like it or not, whether it is rationally funded or not, Hitler is a symbol for nazism and the holocaust.

Reminders to such events are fine, but in the right context. A restaurant is not the right context for such references.

or the various Kennedy's resteraunts, in case it offended the vietnamese

As i said before, you cant have it both ways, you either want free speech or dont, Tris and Mr Seel are spot on

Well, actually one of the main things is that people, no matter what the context will think badly of hitler. And as such, no context would be good.

If i started a thread that told of the good things that came out of nazi/hitler/etc, i'd be gulled in a second and deemed a neo-nazi.

Quite right. Like i said, a Truman deli would be a-ok in people's books...even though the bugger ordered not one, but TWO a-bombs.

Call me old fashioned but invading another country, forced sterilisation, kidnapping of foreign children from their parents because they look "german", ghettos, forced labour camps, gassing of civilians in custom built death camps and promotion of a national ideology that promotes the idea that one race or nationality is superior to another would be enough to haul you up to a court in my book.

You should start some sort of hug hitler it wasn't all his fault you know campaign.
After all he was just a misunderstood man who only wanted world peace and little blood blue eyed children to smile, he was just surrounded by very bad men who commited crimes unbeknownst to him.

Or perhaps Idi Amin Dada brand Liver?
Or perhaps Pol Pot brand fertilizer.
Or perhaps IRA brand fireworks marketed in Warrington and Birmingham.
Or a butchers shop in Yorkshire named after Peter Sutcliffe with his grinning bearded face outside?
Of course people will find it offensive.
If people go out of their way to be crass someone will have something to say.

But like I said earlier, trash has the right to be trash, and a Hitler themed restaurant is as trashy as it gets.

Tris: It's not about the jews caring. It's about completely ignoring the symbolic value of Hitler. Associating Hitler (and thus nazism and the holocaust) with something acceptable and enjoyable (going out for dinner) is wrong. References to such cruel things do not belong in such a context.

Tohtori: History classes and musea are a perfectly acceptable context to talk about Hitler and nazism. You can even talk about the good things Hitler did there (such as his full-employment politics). Even on a forum you can discuss these things. None of this ignores the symbolic value Hitler has, some people may be shocked about your opinions, but that's a different thing.

I could list hundereds of atrocities done by the examples i mentioned,
but there wasnt a thread about it was there?
and the lasting damage of a atom bomb is a hell of alot more fu**ed up than Nazi Germany ever managed, it is the single most destructive and long lasting weapon used by Man to this day how you can even put them on the same scale is beyond me yet the resteraunts Tohorti mentioned arent even being discussed here.

This is just something stupid, but ill respong anyway.
Hitler is irrelevant, what is relevant is the double standards of most people who are posting against it.
The fact of the matter is hitler did alot of good for Germany, aswell as bad
Its up to the individual which aspects they want to see

If you want to go into symbology,
The swastika is an ancient good luck symbol associated with Hinduism, Buddhism and a multitude of oriental traditions far before the Nazi utilised it, by continually using it in reference to Nazi Germany you are ruining its true meaning. but then good luck doesnt sell papers

Were did I say I didn't want free speech?
I'm perfectly aware of Sharon's crimes, I am a member of the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Movement and have visited the middle east as well as raised money for Palestinian families.

I have said on at least 2 occasions in this thread that Trash has the right to be trash.
So don't try to paint me as someone who wants something banned simply because I do not agree with it.
