To me, "buffs please", sounds like the person expects me to buff them and anything else would be an outrage. It sounds like a command, not an asking of a favour. As such it would look ok to me if asked within a group, but not otherwise.

If they instead would say "may i have some buffs?" even without the please and even if from someone outside my group, i would look more kindly towards that request, as it doesn't assume anything.

 Exactly

I try to avoid abbrevations, heck I still type congratulations rather gratz as a statement, but theres one simple solution.

If anyone asks me for gold plz or buffs plz, I ignore them or if they are persistant I tell them not until they've learnt to type/talk respectfully. If your asking someone for a favour the least you can do is give them the honour of a full please.

If they argue they get nothing, I wont lose sleep over it.

Maybe this hails back from the time of smite clerics where you had to yank them out of their killing spree on occasion with a timid heal request... <looks at Flimgoblin>

if I'm cackling madly (think palpatine in episode 3) firing lightning bolts I'm as likely to notice your low hp bar as I am to notice your pitiful whimpering on the group line and I'm far more likely to heal if I notice the former :)

There is a very useful thing in DAoC: /rpfilter

I started hating the "Gratz", "gtz" and all its other abreviations in beta already. The first thing I did when they intrpduced /rpfilter was to replace them. Next was stuff like "plz", "pls", "wtf", "omg", "ppl". (I use them myself but it doesnt matter since they show to me as written out.)
There is one thing thou I really really hate and were /rpfilter can not help me: "m8"!
I really despise people who I meet and talk to for the 1st time ever and who call me "m8".

If you are about to trouble someone, to make him take time to do you a favour, like out-of-group heals and/or buffs, atleast you can take your time to ask nicely

Excuse me, but could you spare a few buffs? :)

Sorry to trouble you, but could you spare a few coins for a horse? :)

Excuse me, and sorry to trouble you, I dont usually do begging, but im new to the server and was wondering if you had any lowbie items you could do without, Im a <insert class here>?

Pople who dont speak english very well, like my girlfriend, can even do that. who cares if its spelt right, if it seems polite.

2.
When I play my cleric and someone says /g Heal, I usually just leave the group :p ... As said by a previous poster "trust me to do my job, and just do yours" if Im not healing there is probably a very good reason for it eg. being interupted, out of power, healing someone else or whatever. Its not like I ask the tank to tank or the caster to nuke

What really troubles me is when people dont respond to a question.

Was doing Traldors Staff in the weekend, saw someone dieing to a Traldorian Loyalist...

/send <name> Hello, saw you died to a traldorian Loyalist, did you do the encounter, or could me and a friend join for the credit? Im a friar with FOP and my mate is a Theurgist with 6 sec pbt

no answer, waited a few mins incase he was releasing, getting ressed etc.

/send <name> Hello, did you do the encounter?

Still no answer

journied to the temple and gates was closed...
Started the encounter, just to find out 30 mins later that traldor was killed by people that logged inside :m00:

Oooooh how anoying this is. What the hell are they thinking? I mean hell, if I am not healing then I probably got a reason for that and usaly its their fault for not keeping me clear of aggro.
I start boiling when somebody does that but usaly I don't say anything the 1st time. Repeatition mostly results in me not finding my heal button in time to prevent death.

Well put, that's exactly the same way I respond. The way a player replys after also affects my opinion of them - if I can't give somebody buffs, most people reply with a 'kk nps' or 'thanks anyway', but if (like quite a lot of people) they just walk off to the next person without replying at all then I'm sure as hell not going to buff them next time even if I do have the conc.

If someone can't be bothered to give me the courtesy of a properly asked question they don't get jack.

There is a real difference between using abbreviations during combat etc when it makes perfect sense to not type everything out in full (although as a touch typist with around 50wpm it doesn't bother me) and not being arsed to type a proper sentence when asking for a favour.

Use the words excuse me, or could you or anything similarly phrased is far more likely to result in the desired buffs/coin/items then coming up and going buffs plz.

PS I am also a journalist which tends to make me a complete grammar Nazi :)

No problem with shortenings in tight situations.

People who pm me with "Want MP Chn Hlm Plz" don't necessarily get very far. It's not a terribly polite way to ask me to spend an hour or so of my time, if they can't spend 10 seconds of their own on the transaction.

erm, white a nice stack of bollocks we've got here..

so you are saying that, the word please annoys the shit outa you unless its used on some politically perfect expression.. well, u must have been smoking some serious stuff, because on a gaming comunity it IS comon and logical that ppl uses abreviations.. 'proper' requests or expressions WILL BE rare. There is 2 most standard scenarios:
a) ppl adressing others with the use of words such as 'pls' and smileys such as ': )' = friendly/polite behaviour
b) ppl adressing others with blunty requests/orders = annoying/rude behaviour

That above may sound bit stupid at first, but if u take 10seconds to think about it, u will realize that on a internet comunity those abreviations and smileys are extensions to the language, which allow you to 'talk' faster or to somehow show emotions that usually would come in body-language shape..

So taking over your example the choice would be something betwen:
a)'i need buffs / givf buffs / bufffffffssss'
b)' i need buffs pls :) / giiiiiiiiiiv buffs please / buffffssss : D'
Now you tell me which one would discomfort you (the most) .. ill rather take b.

Regarding the massive use of '!' or even '!1!11!' or sometimes caps, is only a way to add emphasis to ur writing. And once again, the 'politically correct' sentences are just not an option.. for instance.. if am rvring for 4 hours and every time someone gets mezzed he says 'oh no, i have been mezzmerized, could you please cure me as soon as possible <bard name>' instead of the standard 'FUCK MEZZZED' ill suggest him a reality check.

ps: am bored :p

Definately you got a point here, in certain situations you would prolly write FUCK MEZZED! or HEAAAL½!!!! ... or somert like that.
But say for example you got this BB or whatever, only why im using "buffs plz" as a statement here is since its the most used sentence in this game :p fyi. So anyways, back to the BB. Youre buffing up ur SB Pally, whatever, ur character, then some random guy comes running up to you n says "buffz plz", hes writing please yeah sure, but in my oppinion that aint really asking for buffs/help is it? Id say its more like ordering someone to buff him, and when you then say "no" or no conc, or whatever, he/Shed go like ":p" and run off to the next shammy/cleric etc. Why would he choose to add the word plz, when please in that sentence has no apparent meaning. The sentence spoken bout here "buffz plz!" has become like an abbrevation itself, stating "give me buffs". The word please has no longer any meaning here does it?

Take that old story we ALL heard when we were young, about the shepard guarding his sheep. Hes shouting WOLF, everybody runs out to the fields, and continuosly does this, even tho there really isnt any wolf there. When the time comes and there actually is a wolf there eating his poor little sheep, nobody belives in him.

Its not like to say the ppl using this sentence to others are like this guy. Its more like saying the word Please on the internet has lost its meaning completely. Alot of ppl actualyl just add the abbrevation plz at the end of their sentences without, probably, not knowing about it, just because theyre used to it...

Now when it comes to tight situations, then ud prolly write different, since you need to get the message out clear and quick. MEZZED, HEAL, END! yadayada etc... But to state the fact again, theres a major difference in a 8v8 fights "writings/talkings" than there is while loitering behind the keeps walls, or when exping somewhere.

Writing with smileys can often affect the entire meaning of ur sentence,
"buffz plz ; )"
"buffz plz : P"
least when i read these two different sentences i get a completely different meaning of what this persons really asking me.

Just a final thing... say i was to have named this topic
I H8 TEH WRD PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111!11!½§1!!!!!
would you even have looked at it? I think itd be deleted and id gotten myself banned within a second after id post it.

Placing it in rvr discussion, ... ehm... can i say? sorry?

Just got home from work, so if theres anything i missed or etc, blame me n post somert bout it and ill counter tomorrow  :)

Dude.....get a life.

If you have a problem with anybody ingame /ignore them.

You could always use a /afk message to say "F*ck off. I am not your personal buffbot, I will not give you buffs, if you continue to piss me off I will just ignore you."

If you don't like the language people use then /ignore them, if you are really that arsey about the whole affair. Else save everybody the hastle of reading an utterly pointless thread.

Oh and for the record.

F*ck off :)
and
F*ck off :D
and even
F*ck off ;)

..is still me telling you... to f*ck off.

Smileys don't alter the meaning of a sentence, the statement is still clear- you just chose to interpret the "tone" of my voice differently. I am not winking at you...I just have something stuck in my eye.

The meaning of the topic being that you wanted to start a thread about how annoyed you are that people use the word please with it apparently meaning nothing. Oh and ofc the fact that you don't like people who spam !!! or ??? or use caps when there is no need?

FUCK ME! Breaking news! Call the newspapers! Somebody doesn't like something so they posted it on a forum!

So, you expect EVERYBODY who wonders if you are able to spare them a buff or two to say:
"Excuse me old chap, would there be any chance of you doing me the greatest favour in the world and buffing my puny little arse with that lovely shiney buffbot of yours pretty please with a cherry on top"

Or, in the interest of getting back out into RVR to kill the buffed bastard that got the better of you as soon as possible (and they are always buffed if they beat you) would you say:
"Lo, got any buffs spare pls?"

....spice this thread up with a decent flame fs.

Just read .. interesting post mate :)

By saying that the word please is annoying, do ya mean sorta - that people use the words, then expect that they _must_ have something because theyve been "polite" ?

Personally when scratting for buffs, i'll go something like " hey mate, any chance you could spare some conc ? :)"

I see what the original poster is trying to get said here and I have to say I agree.

After some nerdy years in front of this screen, ive grown to have certain oppinions about how ppl actually say things.

For example, leaving more than 1 "!" exclamation mark will just make me look the other way, since nobody reall will read it anyways cause its probably written by someone aged 10 years or below. The same goes for "?" question marks. Theres plenty of good examples here really,

selling very cheap stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(so obviously this guy is selling some very cheap stuff, but since most of his sentence was covered in exclamation marks, im very much hoping hes selling some earplugs

Same goes with capital letters, who could ever think that you would get a message forth by writing in capitals. If someone resposible for somert wanna stand out "in the crowd/spam" then absolutely. But when your having a normal situation, i mean, if my counterpart would do that, id just get embarassed "go awaaaay, i dont kow u.. schuuu, away".

Then theres one more thing before we really can start to talk baout the Please word.
Abbreviations is used pretty much in MMORPGs and in general on the internet, but who wouldnt use em, i mean if i never wouldve used them id prolly be writing stuff from 1995 still Good stuff, cept in certain situations.
Say youre for exmaple, talking with a GM on Phys1ks server Youd prolly want to be as clear as possible so they dont missunderstand your problem here. But we do have the over abusing abbrevation users here, who proll thinks a gm knows everything and everybody. "PLZ GM HLP TOI GC PK %#%&/("!", id just go like "wtf?". Or actually id prolly just slap him in his face n tel him to talk english

Now the please word... please is a common word when you talk to ppl irl. Its friendly and polite to say please. "Can pass the salt please?" "yes please" etc etc...
Then if its so very polite, why not use it all the time? Well... Asking your family for the salt, and saying "Buffs please", i mean, who do this guy think he is coming up, sending me a PM with "buffs please". If hed say ie "Could you please buff me <name>?" then id definately buff him.
See the difference in abbrevations and the use of please? Just wait theres more.

Say i wanna get help from someone, id prolly go "ANyone know about .... ?"
Then we have the please word abusers, "PLIZ HLP ME PLZ STUCK NEEEEEEEEEEEeeeEED HEELLPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?"
Is there even need for an explanation here?

Lets go back to the buffing question, "buffs please". Say ur living in an native english talking country, then itd prolly be ok to say this. But ur asking for a favor so u might wanna be polite, right. Then we have the guys NOT living in a native english talking country "buff me please" mkey, since english aint ur native language u might wanna be as clear and polite as you can eh? This aint it
Lets go further into the buff me please thing, cause this is what i hear most of the time.
buffs please - cleared (not polite, screw off no buffs for u)
buff me please - cleared (not polite, screw off no buffs for u)
"buff plz" Here we have the abbrevation guys coming in again, like /ignore???? Please were used in the sentence but i mena cmon???

wrong :plz lead me to right direction!???! PLZ?! - abuse, ur a retard!
right: Hey man, could you show me which direction the exit is?

wrong:show me itamz plz!!!!!!?? - abuse, fucko!
right: cool stuff there man Can I inspect a sec?

wrong: PLIS I NEED 5 GOLD PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!! - get a job!
right: oh crap, anyone with 5 gold i could borow? :/ <-- using ":/" cause being poor is somert u dont wanna say out loud

PLZ GIFV BUFFZ! the internet l33t fucking morons, go fuck someone else... all i gotta say.

All in all, after aprox 15years behind MUDs and MMOs, the word please in my world has become...
THE MOST FUCKING ANNOYING SHITWORD THERE FUCKIN IS! I HATE THE FUCKING WORD PLEASE PLZ PLIS IN WHATEVER FUCKING ABBREVATION! GAH!

Theres a really good topic here somewhere with the "f-word-movie"... good word. Usable as almost every word in a sentence,
fucking please abuse fuckers
one more time... fuck. thank you

lol

oh btw... le flame is on!

I think you have a nice point/argument, sometimes if you make a bit of effort in a pm it pays off. I hate it when someone says "you have gold for me" or "give me weapons" but for comical value,

PLZ buffzor MEEEeeEEE3333Ee tbh!!!oneoneeleven111!

erm. Are you saying a englishman is being polite and i am not when saying "buffs please" ? Because that is pretty far out :kissit:
As a long time healer i can just say this: no matter what words someone chooses to use, the message is still the same. "pom plz!", "got conc for some buffs?" etc. Who ever it is who is asking just wants a friggin buff, all you have to do is say no or buff him/her (not answering is just plain rude).
I do however find myself buffing "nice" people more often than "not caring" people, so there is -some- gold among all the crap

Eh, yes, well done you, but the point is that there is a world of difference between saying "any chance I could have a pox?" and going "pox pls". That is the whole point of this thread. Let me illustrate with a down-to-earth example: if you are walking up to a pretty thing at a bar, you can either get to the point and say "sex pls"*, or you can start off by being friendly and charming and make her feel appreciated, etc etc. The intent may be the same, but the modus operandi is what is important.

(* = admittedly, this strategy has been known to work too, depending on the level of desperation, prettiness and intoxication in you and your victim; the point is that the latter strategy is much more likely to result in you scoring. :D)

So a buff ask should be along the lines of:

Apologies for being so forward, but i find you very leet, and was wondering if you could spare a moment to buff me up? I know what you're thinking, "you're juts going to get the buffs and never call me again". But i assure you, i'm not that kind of a character. I promise this isn't just a one-buff-stand. So, what do you say, could we maybe go somewhere and talk some more? Who knows, i may be the buff of your dreams *smile*

Or?
