sorry for hijacking the jotd thread, and dont get me wrong: I in no way condone the "joke" he posted, its just that I think they'd atleast should give him a reason/warning, thats really all I tried to get to. That and the fact that "dont become all prissy&uptight"

xtro: to point #2: Just because you call someone a farking faggot doesnt actually mean "I hate gay ppl", it has become a word of curse, and most ppl use it as such, not with the intent to hurt every gay person that reads it. When I hear faggot, i think moron, jerk etc, not a man who likes to have sex/be with other men. Same thing with retard, i dont conclude that if you shout retard at someone they must be physically or mentally retarded.


ofc, the second time he got banned he got what he deserved, no argue. but the first time they couldve either let him go with a warning, or atleast tell him that racism is out, like cjravey did. There is a thin line between a "racist" joke and a RACIST joke. (or it can be atleast). His joke was out of line, but he didnt necessarily think it was.

Perhaps the moral here is that ppl don't know how you mean something on a forum. In a works canteen, or a night out in the pub, you can tell an off-colour gag, guage reaction, make your apologies and - if necessary - get your coat. People can take your stance, your wider personality, into account.

Just be careful what you say.

And, at the risk of causing offence, if you get banned, get over it. Wait out your ban, be nice, and soon you'll be back - if you want to be. In the meantime, some fresh air and some cider might prove a nice break anwyay.

They don't dish out reasons cos the people who have a problem with the ban dive in and pick apart the reasons. It's far easier to give no reason and let the community make up it's own mind as to what was done wrong.

Bif is currently at the local chip shop haggling over whether extra crispy batter bits should *really* levvy an extra 10p charge and truing to decide between Irn Bru and Tizer.

His lack of an explanation (if he intends to give one) is due to him being out at the moment - nothing more sinister than that.

I'm sure if the banned person approaches him with the sort of manners we'd all expect to be approached with in our working life, things will work out shweet.

As for the clique thing, that's *kind* of what i meant - and my earlier post was a gentle nudge to remind you that although this is a community-centric forum, the ultimate power doesn't necessarily rest there. Well, OK, it does - because you can leave - but it's in an idealistic, power to the workers way which doesn't actually work in day to day life. Phew. What a swathing generalisation I've just made.

And the 'allowed' comment did make me grind my teeth a bit and think ' cheeky bugger - we've "allowed" no such thing!'

it can be _VERY_ hard to make up your own mind when all you see is "edited by masked moderator" and banned under the nick.

which wont be a problem if one of two is fulfilled:

a) you are black

b) you are cool/hip/down like a clown, ch-cha-cha-cha-charlie brown.


you see its not the wording as much as the meaning behind (which can be damn hard to identify from posts) or the conjunction its written in.

If I say "Whats up my nigger?" its a lot less harmful then "Hi you nigger" for instance.

(both will prolly get me killed since im a) milky white and b) not in the least bit hip/cool/down like.. yeah you know. )

If I see someone has been banned I just assume he/she did something completely unacceptable and got what they deserved.

If I see them unbanned a short while later then I assume they have said they are sorry and have been given another chance.


And that sounds reasonable to me.

I think Big G has mistaken 'clique' for 'community' and he just feels left out.

There's not as much of a clique on here as there was when I first started posting, and I don't see how it can be a clique when everyone is arguing with one another half the time (yes, myself being the main culprit)

Arnor - FYI I did reply to a private message from dragon asking why his thread was deleted, I said the content was inappropriate. He then went on to post his racist joke, then when I deleted the post and suspended his account he created another account and went on to post more racist stuff.

He may be only "joking" but he was warned, if he chooses to ignore that then it is his decision.

This forum is like a nursery compared to when I joined. There's a couple of people who seem full of bile and hate that piss me off, other than that most are ok. These same people probably hate me (fuck, I can bet one does) - WOOP DE FUCKING DO. Fact is, its an internet forum, not the pub - where things would be far different.

Not quite a nursery, but it's changed beyond recognition. Frankly, I miss bodhi. The forum (IMO) hasn't been the same since he was banned, nobody will agree with me but hey.
