It does appear to bring about a yin-yang response in a lot of people doesn't it. Some people adore it and some people viscerally hate it.

I think they've been OK so far. The first better than the second, but the second was very impressive in some of it's underwater stuff. But I've not felt the need to rewatch.

Still the highest grossing film of all time, and actually released today in 2008.

I think that's it though - it was visually stunning at the time, today it's kinda standard and the plot is Pocahontas in space.

Went to see the new Avatar in 4DX. The missus made me do that bit - I was very skeptical.

Really enjoyed it. It's a fairground ride. And I hate fairgrounds more than almost anything. But getting thrown about in a chair, air blown at you and the occasional sprinkling of water had us both laughing.

The film? No surprises. It's "solidly competent". And I think maybe that's part of the appeal - I've watched so much utter shit this year. But I fancied a brainless low-risk night out and to do something different - I almost never go to the cinema any more.

Glad I did tbh.

I loathe 4DX; did it once, no thanks.

It certainly takes away from the film and I'm in no rush to do it again. But maybe it was a perfect mix for that sort of easy-to-follow action nonsense and that we both needed a bit of cheering up.

The o/h was laughing, so that carried it a fair bit :)

By all accounts it's the worst of the 3 and it's not even close.
I've heard it's better than the second.

Not seen it but will comment when I do. I'm a fan of the franchise from a technical perspective and a "oh that's pretty" perspective but the plots tend to be meh.

I do know that there weren't any major technical advancements on this one though, but from a colouring perspective (and sound) it's meant to outshine the second.

Ask me in 3 months.

I saw it, quite enjoyed it. Some quite nice emotional moments in there, but it's still quite similar in acts to the first two.

They showed a trailer of sorts for The Odyssey and that was pretty amazing in proper full IMAX. Started off with John Bernthal doing his best "lemme tellya somfin" sat in some ancient bar chewing a cigar.

I got in after that had ended, and can't find it offline.

Looking forward to it tbh.

Predator Badlands was better than I expected; nice bit of world building. Prey, the animated one and now this are all doing a good job of revitalising a fucked franchise.

(Oh, and it's explained why he's a bit weird looking as Predators go).

It uses a Shepard tone just like he did in Dunkirk, it's a really good "trailer".

I know I'll get called a gammon for pushing back against the "woke" here but Sinners has gotten sixteen Oscar nominations.

Sixteen!

It was kind of a not as fun version of From Dusk Till Dawn with a mostly black cast. Was fun. Was definitely worth a watch. Music was very good and the performances all round were strong. But it was a long way from special IMO. And certainly a long long way from "most number of nominations ever" special.

Sound was 10X better than FDTD, cinematography was better, acting was better, cast was better, s, there's probably a bit of "2020s fads" in it - It is very much a spiritual successor of FDTD, but 30 years newer.

This is the whole "Why is Taylor Swift winning best singer of all time when there were better female singers in the 90s and noughties" but for music.

Sixteen nominations! Sixteen! That says not just best film this year (it wasn't) but spoken about in terms alongside the best films ever.

it was solid. If that's where the oscars are at that says an awful lot.

To be fair there was actually fuck all out last year; even the F1 movie is up for best picture! Add that to the usual represent bullshit (like Black Panther's nominations) then it's not that surprising. Hamnet will probably win everything anyway.

Wow. I mean, I enjoyed it and I'm pretty sure my o/h would have happily had a wank over the scene Pitt was in bed with that blonde girl. But it was pure bubblegum.

If that's what gets you oscar noms nowadays then I might start making films with my old star wars figurines in the woods around here. Trees will look fucking enormous!

None of any of this makes any difference to what he decides to do next week.

This is the film thread @Raven. Although I guess you do at least have to give props for entertainment value.

Watched it last night. Really enjoyed it despite it being utterly retarded :)
