I never saw the race but I heard webber was miles ahead, got the order to slow things down and that's how Vettel caught him.

Is this true?

He wasn't miles ahead, he was ahead. Both drivers were told to maintain positions and bring the cars home in the order they were in. Webber did this, Vettel didn't.

Well, Webber was also told to turn down his engine settings etc. so it wasn't just a case of maintaining position. He argues that Vettel effectively waited for him to turn down the wick and then did the dirty on him, so its actually even worse than a straight overtaking move, Webber wasn't in a position to defend.

Webber was 0.5 seconds faster than Vettel for the 3 laps prior to this occuring, and changed only when he turned on "Multi 21" and Vettel did not.

I can't believe you lot are letting this thread languish down on page 4! Looks like it'll be an interesting season. Poor Webber, as soon as he ran out of fuel I immediately thought "Well that's a bit coincidental!" You can tell Vettel has been spending a lot of time with Schumacher too.

Not setting a time in qualifying 3 and still just missing the podium by 0.2s shouldn't happen, the rules encourage exploiting them rather than actual racing. Apart from the last 5 laps with Vettel catching Hamilton it was tedious, you had no idea where anyone actually was because of all the different strategies dictated by shit tires. There was lots of overtaking but none of it mattered

Dunno - hamiltons ballsy move around the outside of one of the corners which just isn't done was amusing. Forgot who that was on, the commentators were just "what on earth is he doing he's not going to over... oh, he is? That won't sti... oh, he has!"

It's a bit shitty that Lewis got a 5 place drop for having a tyre completely delaminating on him. To me it doesn't sound like he caused the tyre problem which caused the gearbox problem.

It didn't - Pirelli admitted it was a tyre fault. Pirelli annoy the fuck out of me more and more each race.

I agree with David Coulthard. The rules on gearbox and engine changes need looking at. As has already been said, the gearbox change wasn't caused by a mechanical failure within the engine, it was damaged by the rear tyre failing. Pirelli really need to step up in Spain becaise the tyres sucked donkey balls this weekend. What the hell happened to Massa's rear tyre? It just came away from the side wall.

Need to cut Pirelli some slack tbh. They've designed these shitty tyres under the orders of the FIA. The delaminations this weekend aren't exactly in the script but Bahrain is fucking hot.

As said, at no point has any company willingly said "We'll make ourselves look shit and effectively lessen our sales in public". Pirelli *do* have a large say in the matter regardless of FIA's instruction. They can still carry out FIA's instructions without putting the lives of drivers at risk.

Anyone who has had the misfortune to use their road tyres shouldn't be shocked, they are usually awful there too. Bring back the tyre wars between Bridgestone and Michelin I say.

Damn right, the development that brought on was immense. Silly thing really is that the tyres yesterday were more dangerous than that disasterous Indy race (2005?)

It continues, but at least this time Pirelli have admitted fault and that they will be making changes. Not until British GP though... bah.
Another cracker of a race from Alonso who's very much showing his ability and class above the likes of Vettel. Certainly a hell of a great first few corners!

In general though, it's a shame to see (not limited to) the Mercs trounce everyone in quali and fail so badly in the race but this is something that shouldn't be happening period. At no point should any driver be told not to race another, at least not when they're in direct competition with you. Nor should someone regarded as the fastest driver in F1 be told to slow down because the atrocities between their wheels and the ground are not capable of doing the job they're meant for. It's not all down to the tyres but they have such an impact on everything else on the car - aero, suspension/hydraulics, driver stability etc they really are ripping the sport to bits. I don't like to think "What If" too much as it's dwelling on the past (What if Schumacher wasn't a cheating cunt, what if Senna wasn't a twat etc" but I do often wonder what this and last season would have been like with a decent set of rubbers. Hell, I think this year we'd have had better racing if Durex supplied them.

At least the tyres would be easy to brand.

The tyres have been a bit of a joke. I mean 4 stops?? Was with a bunch of friends here in Spain watching the race. I almost shat myself when Alonso was busting his moves thinking a part of his car would make contact and come flying off. Rosberg having to go all-out defensive after just coming out of the pits killed his tyres. Poor Mercs but if they get good pace and reliability surely they can just force a win in Monaco?

Very sad when you think the vast majority of all marshalls are unpaid. Many of them are British who are sent around the world, expenses barely covered. Horrible to think about it when you think about the money in F1. Horrible accident, apparently very much came about because of too much rushing around.

Webber's quitting at the end of the season. Not a massive surprise given that he was being talked about as a Porsche racer back in April but still, he's one of the good guys. My neighbour's daughter is a RAF helicopter pilot and they were doing some display somewhere (possibly Goodwood, I don't know if that's a possibility). She said that there was a load of F1 drivers there and the only one that had any time to talk to the kids and be shown around the helicopter was Webber.

It's just a shame Webber can't start a race properly otherwise he could have gone to Ferrari.

I like Mark. Says what he means and means what he says, plus he's down to earth. He'll be missed certainly.

Think it'll be a cracking race this weekend. Something tells me Hamilton has got this.
