Hey, when i go to device manager i have a yellow ? next to "Multimedia Controller", and apparently that's to do with sound which as of yet i dont have anything except the onboard speaker for the odd annoying beep.

When i try updating the driver i get all the normal windows then once its installed it just comes up with The Data is Invalid. So fucking annoying.

I have just downgraded my pc from Vista to XP, all other drivers are working fine except this one. It is also happening with any USB device, my Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000 comes up with bluetooth HID mouse and then data is invalid.

I've tried the registry editing trick, the Driver.cab trick and all sorts of shite but no joy. It's so fucking annoying, anybody? :)

Yeah sorry im a little stressed and forgot the vitals lol.

HP Pavillion s3431uk
PC

I think the computer is designed for Vista, comes with a vista recovery partition which is a load of fucking junk due to the utter HP shite they put on which slows it down dramatically. Fucking cocks.

I'm so stressed, i've tried altering permissions in regedit, i've tried doing all sorts and when trying to update Multimedia Controller (which is to do with sound) im still getting this DATA IS INVALID! ARGH!

What exactly was the registry fiddle you did? Was it in CurrentControlSet/ENUM/PCI ?

Have you tried asking Windows to search for the driver, or doing a Wupdate?

Sound is fixed, advised a reinstall/repair installation of XP as it sounds rather like a bunch of corrupted DLL files further from the sound issue :)
