The Atkins Diet

Today i decided to have a gander at books inside WHSmith and i came face-to-face with the Atkins Diet book. I havent considered a diet before really speaking, recently due to me becoming fulltime and not being able to go the gym.

But today i was told i can go back Part Time if i desired - thus getting time/rest for gym.

I had a quick read of it, but only a quick one, so i couldnt really find what i thought i was looking for.

I might go buy this book within next few days, but only if i know it works and doesnt do anything "bad" to you.

Has anybody had any problems while on this diet? How long does it take for the weight to drop? What is the main types of foods you can have?

What stuff is there to be weary about? Just general information on this book..

Its extremly unhealthy, if you eat carbs in even a small amount it wont work.

Your denying your body of an essential food type, does it sound healthy to you? Join a gym, eat healthy food and keep a balanced diet. I don't see how that is a difficult concept for people to grasp.

Probably the worst thing you could do I think. All that time sitting around thinking about what's in the fridge :/

Just get up earlier or hit the gym after work. Take a while to get used to but think it'd still be easier than drastically overhauling your entire diet. Corned beef for breakfast would make me want to vomit.

Damn it Ch3tan, we want a miracle cure! NOW YOU BAST!

Joined the gym today :( I might even sign up for swimming lessons, which will be wholly degrading, but not quite as degrading as being the girl clinging to the inflatable ring for dear life when the wave pool in Greece got too much. I don't know if the swimming lessons will honestly do much good though, cos I had loads of swimming lessons when I was younger, and I think its just because I'm a bit broken and can't move my arms and legs at the same time in any sense of co-ordination. I don't so much swim as postpone drowning.

These diets aren't needed if you eat a normal amount of food and don't sit on your arse all the time ;)

Didn't this diet attribute to a woman dieing?

It not healthy to deny your body the fuel it need to work! especially since you will still be eating food, requiring your body to use it limited energy reserves to digest food that doesn't replenish you.

Such comments are the result of ignorance, no offense to anybody.

Buy the book and read it SG, make your own mind up.

My brother in law tried it... Said he couldn't manage it ;)

Mainly because the lack of potatoes, etc. drove him mad.

Doesn't seem very good though, to me. As mentioned above, the best diet really is to eat a normal amount of food and excerise regularly :)

Read a few reports about the health affects, now some women at work that are on it. It works very well in the short term, but then all the wieght just comes back, and it comes back even more if they stop and eat carbs even in small amounts.

SG, worry about being healthy and lose weight in a responsible way.

The simple answer is its ok to do as long as you follow the book and don't go on a non-carb for longer than it tells you.

There was a "Have your say" on the BBC site and a lot of people were doing it under the impression that you never eat carbs again for the rest of your life. Thats not the way it works...

heh, ditto. I've been on a diet for about 5 weeks and I've lost a stone but it seems to have stopped coming off quite so fast now so I joined the local gym. I've got my induction next week.

I was going to go on the Atkins, but decided I couldn't live without bread and potatoes so I didn't and someone gave me a diet which I do three days a week, then eat sensibly the rest of the time and it's worked very well. Hopefully with going to gym thrown in I should lose some more weight, as I aim to lose 5 stone (already lost one). Yes, I am a fat bastard.

I worked full time for about nine months working in a shop which we weren't allowed to sit down in, ever. Most days involved carrying lots of heavy boxes and basically being on my feet all day. I ate relatively healthily (no worse than anyone else I know) and managed to put on at least a stone in that time. Your theory doesn't work for everyone :)

I have a copy of the book I've never used, provided my mother hasn't given it to someone I'll flog my copy to you on the cheap SG?

There is truth in both arguments guys.

But tbh exercise and smaller, healthier portions are the best advice anyone can take. This is the way I did it and I lost 5 stone and haven't put a single pound back on. It took me a while but I never got obsesive once about the food types I was eating.

I will say though that I did reduce my carb intake a bit. But then I was fat in the first place due mainly to carb abuse as this was the main food group I was eating.

Personally I would stay clear of the Atkins diet. This may be due to personal ignorance but I believe an extremly low carb, high protien diet can be detremental to the health of your kidneys in the long term. If you aren't exercising or drinking enough water.

Like I say:

Exercise + smaller healthier portions = win.

When I say exercise I mean a combination of strength training and cardio 3 times a week.

I bet you were eating sugary foods, and packing away the bread and pasta. Anyway, not all of that weight gain might have been fat. If you were working hard, you might find that it was muscle mass.

When i started the gym (as a dole boy) last november, i lost about 6 stone in under 4months just through the gym. Then when i got this job and i couldnt commit as much time to the gym as i wanted, thus i didnt lose what i wanted or gain what i wanted.

Then i was given full time honours a couple of weeks ago, which have completly hindered my chances of losing weight through exercise. But ive been given the chance again to go Part Time which i have taken (Took a lot to persuade my manager).

Recently i havent been feeling too good (stressed out), im working too many hours at work without enough sleep, ive been knocked back (again) by a girl who i like (workin on it still tho :p), and its coming upto my Bros anniversary in 2weeks so thats been on my mind.

Ive never been one for diets, just plain old exercise when i can afford time but i wanna lose weight somewhat faster than usual now.

Can I just add before I get flamed for dissing the atkins diet.

I did honestly lose 5 stone my own way. It took about 18 months, which may seem like a long time but I have yet to put any of it back on.

I feel 200 percent now and I can't stress how it has changed my life.

SG, quick solutions are always the worst. Your metabolism probably wont have adjusted properly and you're pretty much guarenteed to whack a lot of it back on. Take your time and the time will fly in. It's more about a change of attitude rather than a short term fix to lose the fat it took years to put on.

Losing 6 stone in 4 months isn't quick enough for you? Fucking hell, did you eat at all during that period? I didn't realise it was possible to lose weight so fast.

Has anyone else tried the 'live in a box and survive on only water for 6 weeks' diet yet? ;)

I usually had a plain french baguette or a pasta salad for lunch, so you're right... still, I'd have thought my weight would have stayed the same.

I've put on weight in the past 9 months, but I'm prone to eating when I get depressed and seeing as I've spent the last 9 months wallowing in self-pity and depression at home it hasn't helped. Hopefully losing weight will help my self esteem.

It is unlikely that he lost 6 stone of pure fat in that time.

yeah i know... i was pretty shocked/pleased with myself too! But after that it slowed down and i didnt get the time in to train as hard as i wanted too. I need to lose about another 4stone though to be happy with myself

(So then i'll be about.. 17/18st). Then when i hit that im thinking of taking up rugby... again

Well,

A true measure of how well you are doing is to take a body fat measurement. This discriminates between muscle mass and body fat to get a true reading of how much weight you are losing.

I take it back SG. If you were that heavy your body would need a lot of energy to sustain itself so its quite possible the 6st was fat.

Keep it up :) ..

I'm about 9 stone :D
But also a shortass (5'4") :(

I think that's about the correct weight for my height, don't think I'm particularly fat or thin but still wanna get down the gym some time to tone up a bit.
Play football twice a week for exercise.
