Thanks dysfunction :)

I actually use a Sony CMR-PC2 Extra. It's a great little camera (literally, it's about the size of a small box of matches) but the resolution isn't great because its a few years old now (having checked, it's apparently not available any more). Because the native resolution is so low it has to be stretched a lot, so quality isn't great, but it's a cool effect nonetheless :)

Kind Regards

Hi Jonty,

Very cool effect, but there are a couple of anomolies that perhaps you could explain?

The view of the monitor seems to be almost identical in both shots, even though in the second shot you say it is coming from a different camera. There only appears to be a few inches between the back of the laptop and teh TFT screen, surely a webcam that close up would simply show a close up of that monitor? It certainly shouldn't be able to look round the corner and see the lava lamp!

Also the shadow from the camera flash, or whatever lighting you have is identical. Wouldn't the bottom of the back monitor be much darker than that? The laptop should be putting it in shade?

I feel almost heretical even beginning to doubt the word of someone as fine and upstanding as yourself, and I am quite sure that there is a simple explanation. I just look forward to hearing it :)

Hi RB

hehe, well spotted :) In this instance I didn't have enough room on my desk to put both my camera and my laptop and position them correctly. As you say, it was just too close and too dark, given where the lights are. So I stood back where I took the original photo, took my photo in roughly the same position, then let it update. You get the effect but as you say, it's not quite how it's normally done, hence the anomolies you spotted.

Please don't ever feel bad about questioning, that's how we learn :D

The examples on flickr often show it off better than I managed on my desk without going to the funny position lengths.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. I cropped the photo too to loose the excess the scenary :) I'll set it up properly later on with the right amount of space and such. Try it if you have a webcam and some spare time, though, it's a clever effect.

Thanks Yaka :) I see you have a Shuttle too in amongst things. I must admit I really like the newer design systems like you have, but I can't bring myself to part with my existing kit, nor will my wallet let me ;) (it does have a gold plated cooling system, though, hehe).

Do you have cooling problems with your Shuttle, only I notice the case is off? sorry, I won't turn this into the 'Actual Desk and Technical Support' thread, just curious :)).

Kind Regards

Jonty, is your Shuttle AGP or PCI-express? As you know from my 'Sony are a shower of shite' (or something ;)) thread, I'm going to get rid of my Vaio and get a shuttle, but the new ones all seem to be PCI-ex based and since I have a new (AGP) X800 pro I want to get an AGP one. I know from a long-term pov I should go PCI express but if I eBay my card I'm even more out of pocket than I'm going to be  Anyway, to cut a long story short, I like the look of your shuttle, its purdy.

Hi DaGaffer

My Shuttle is around a year or two old now, so it's AGP. As it was a special edition only a thousand or two were made, but you can still get other Shuttle systems based on the same 'G2' design. The SN75G2 supports Pentium 4 processors (Socket 478) and comes with a decent feature set. As standard it comes with the same black brushed aluminium case with the side mesh, and then you could buy the PF61 (catchy name ;)) mirror panel to match. This would then, from outside, look like my system. One word of warning, the mesh grill on the case is great for cooling, but it can get loud.

If you're not bothered about the 'ReflectiX' face plate then the SN95G5V2 is a very nice looking system which supports the Athlon 64 (Socket 939) and AGP. Alternatively, the SB77G5 sports the same external design but is designed for the newer Socket 775 Pentium 4 processors. There are probably other AGP supporting Shuttles, but these were the most immediately apparent from browsing their site.

If you did go PCI-Express, then note the SB86i is designed around the PicoBTX form factor, which in theory makes upgrading the motherboards easier in comparison to proprietary designs (it is theory, though, as PicoBTX is still very new; and note the design is perhaps more fashionable/dateable than the others). Alternatively, again supporting Pentium 4 processors and PCI Express, the SB95PV2 is about a powerful a Shuttle as you'll find. Intel 925XE motherboard supporting the brand new 1066Mhz FSB Pentium 4s, 350W SilentX PSU, DDR2 RAM support, 2x PCI Express slots, 7.1 HD audio, Gigabit LAN, SATA RAID and 8-in-1 card reader ... it'd wipe the floor with pretty much any but the most high-end desktops :) That said, it is a triffle ugly in comparison to Shuttle's other designs.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Kind Regards

I have the SN95G5V2 and it is great. It was a dream to build and is fairly quiet which was an important requirement for me, in fact my lappy is noisier than the shuttle. As for looks, I didn't really care, function over form for me i'm aftraid as could be seen by the amount of filth on my car... I am told by my geekier friends that the thing looks damn swooshy though.

I've been meaning to do an updated shot on this thread for a bit so here's to a revival.

I'm quite happy with this set-up, though I wouldn't say no to having some more physical desk space.
