A weakened team compared to the assets at his disposal. Not those that are out injured. Why would he have to talk to the board etc about not fielding an injured player.

Because they still have a mathematical shot at the title and its a disservice to their fans? Not that this isn't all posturing anyway; they have enough of a squad to rotate without significantly weakening the team, especially given the suspensions and cup-tied players.

It won't be a weakened team, half his backup would walk into a top 5 team, a result of Chelsea spending loads on bench players (and players happy to be bench players) over the years.

I still think it is a bit of an unknown exactly what he will actually do but I think the recent injuries to players combined with the news ones have certainly raised the very real possibility he will dabble with the team selection, especially with the return leg so soon after the Liverpool game. Mathematically yes we have a shot but it is a long one thanks to some poor results to lower league opposition recently, it requires both LP and MC to lose games and us not to slip up on any team fighting to remain in the PL.

For me if I were a Chelsea player I do not want my manager telling everyone we can't fight on all fronts. If he fields a weakened team he is telling everyone his team is not good enough to beat Liverpool and AM. And as a player that has to be a kick in the teeth.

But if he does play a weakened team it is just because he is trying for the managerial god tag. He plays a full strength team and Rodgers wins he looks like a chump. If he plays a weak team and loses but beats AM he looks good. If he plays the weaker team and wins he gets to gloat about tactical genius.
