Thing is, refs aren't meant to take other decisions into account when making others.

They are also not supposed to take the players reputation into account but are you telling me the fact Saurez has a rep for making the most of it does not make the ref wonder?

I know there was contact in both cases and the first was a penalty by modern standards but it did look soft and even though he shouldn't I think the ref took that into account. I do not mind a bit of luck tbh.

Not at all, reputation matters a lot more than it should, which quite frankly is a load of bullshit. (Except in the case of Ashley Young, that bellend could get decapitated and still wouldn't deserve a penalty.)
