They are different, that is the issue. The shape and nature of a blade makes it a cutting surface, a rounded stud will gouge but due to friction from it's shape will not do the same amount of tissue damage.

Well, the most common form of studding or blading is accidently standing on someone elses foot, either normally or in a tackle.

I can tell you from experience that blades are much less painful than studs. When you're trod on with soft ground studs you can barely walk for the next 5 minutes.
