Problem with Messi (and Ronaldo to an extent) is lack of success at international level. Pele, Maradona (and Zidane) will always have that extra contribution to the history books, and its the big difference between Messi and Maradona in particular; Maradona took an ordinary Argentina team and dragged it up to win the World Cup in 1986 (and make no mistake Maradona won the 86 World Cup); Messi hasn't shown the same ability to galvanise an (arguably much more technically gifted) Argentina team. With Ronaldo its a bit more forgiveable because Portugal are second tier.
