Where in the rule book does it state that everything has to be "real". At the end of the day they fooled all the people watching it "live" and put on a good show which is what the opening ceremony is all about, and bringing politics into this is just stupid tbh.

The Olympic Opening Ceremony is a show. You watch it to be entertained. Does it matter how they create these things? What is the difference between this and anything you go to see at the theatre? (or Cinema as not many people go to the theatre anymore.)

Agree with Cadelin, I enjoyed it and will continue to enjoy the Olympic games and personally I couldn't care less, the rest of it was real anyway.

I've always seen the olympic opening ceremony as a show of a nations history, culture and personality, not a CG film experience. I reckon the organisers wanted to wow everyone with the ceremony, with the hope of the viewer forgetting any previous controversy surrounding the games.

And Catelin, where does it stop then? In the end you could make an animation film instead of the opening event, I think it should be live performances and a show of the cultures of the nations, as somebody before me mentioned.

Obviously you can tell the difference, and my point was there IS a difference, so any reference to George Lucas is an invalid argument, as he was not in the same business, but I'm happy to know that you can tell the difference

Yes, it does matter - the opening ceremony has recently become a reflection of the society and competition - ie. Faster, Higher, Stronger.

Not Longer, Prettier, Falser. People want a LIVE show - the idea that things can be done without electronic enhancements of their actions (especially under pressure) is the marvel of it. There is rather a difference between that and simple 'being entertained at the cinema' though those who watch Kung-Fu/Martial Arts might also disagree as they don't want to see bullshit CGI - Ong Bak anyone?

Part of my point. As intoned by Drucken. The Chinese don't accept failure and never have. The girl singing couldn't even afford to get it wrong even if she was live. Getting one firework wrong would have annoyed them.

On a side note: Chinese Taipei? Get stuffed. I have a Taiwanese friend who claims to be from Taiwan and always has, as does basically anyone he's ever met living there. Only China insist on that name and international bodies bow to it.

Sport and politics together suck. Shame.
