Everyone seems to be getting tax rebates these days. Everyone but me.

Congrats though, any plans on what you'll do with it? Coke, drugs and hookers?

I'm actually thinking of giving it to my Mum & Dad as their next Wedding Anniversary present so they can have a nice holiday with it.

I got a couple of grand off January's tax bill, unfortunately it was due to several thousand pounds of bad debts :(

Hoping for a few hundred quid at the end of the tax year... Which will go straight on debts.

I never EVER trust HMRC any more. They ALWAYS get it wrong.
I practically need to hire an accountant to stay on top of their fuckups.
Too much tax paid.
Too little tax paid.
Too much CTC paid.
Too little CTC paid.
Too much BIK.
Too little BIK.

It's got to the point when I have to phone them up after every piece of paper they send me because it's wrong in some way. The most recent was my tax code for the coming year was a K code. I got onto them because they had me down as a car AND a van for the whole year. The van was in a crash Aug 2010 and written off!!! They've been told on 4 occasions that the van is gone and no longer against my name. They still add it to my tax code.
Thankfully it's been sorted out and I now have a "proper" L code.

Zenith, I agree; they are fucking muppeteers. However, I have heard horror stories of people paying accountants who also got it horribly wrong with said person ending up with a massive tax bill once HMRC caught up with them.

Unfortunately, the only person responsible for making sure your tax affairs are in order is you. I am seriously thinking about going self assessment because my tax affairs are complex like yours.

Edit: I am also on a K code, I'm paying £LOL tax at the minute :(

There's a local taxi driver I met a the MOT station, waiting for my car, he says they want 35 grand and he's just throwing the letters in the bin, I'm like, TALK to them mate, he can't sleep and his wife knows nothing.
Holy fuck..don't ignore the taxman, we owed 500 squid for child tax overpayment, they fucked up so bad I said I 'll pay a tenner a month, 3 weeks later they agreed final payment 2016..LOL.

It's an absolute joke, I don't understand, surely its not that hard to log peoples incomes/outgoings and give them the right benefits and shit because of it?

It's public sector remember. If it was private it would be managed properly.

Guess that's what claiming you only earn <7k a year will do to you. Taxi drivers are shocking when it comes to Tax and NI!

You hear of those stories - ppl who have been given small fortunes by the revenue. They go out & spunk the lot, then they find out they're facing criminal charges. Don't spend it till you know its kosher.

So true. Public sector is run by fucking idiots, who employ fucking idiots - because they can't find anyone better willing to work the jobs. It's a nightmare. And its all over-bureaucratically organised into a chaotic mess.

I should know, I work in the public sector :) Tbh, I'm probably a bit bias against though for that reason.

On Topic: I started work this year. All this tax rebate malarkey will happen for me at the end of the tax year when I fill my tax return, right ? Is anyone going to remind me that I need to fill in the tax return ?

I'm literally clueless. \o/ This doesn't make me a hippocrit RE: the above, obvs.

Casino, put £2 on black (always bet on black), double up to £4, buy four lotto tickets, win lotto, retire, die.

You only need to complete a tax return if you are not on PAYE or have any additional income on anything non-standard e.g. rent, interest (if you're a higher rate taxpayer - although I've yet to meet anyone who has registered just for that!), dividends, self employment, second job (possibly but PAYE should be able to deal with it) etc. A person in normal employment should be on PAYE and have tax and NI deducted at source.
