Yeah, but I wanted to know what it was, and now I've found out.

Plus if lot's of people download it we have more chance of working out how to play with it :D

Terragen™ is a work-in-progress scenery generator for Windows and the Mac OS. At this stage of its development, Terragen is free for personal non-commercial use.

Anyone know how I can get a decent poly-count on Terragen....? My landscapes just look blocky.

Theres a horizontal scroll bar just below the 'render preview' button in which you can turn up the detail.....looks very nice when up at 5th notch.

Be warned that changes the quality of both the preview and the actual thing so turn it down again when previewing or else its a waste of time

If you register Terragen it gives you higher resolution option. I used it quite a bit a while ago and made some images for my windows desktop. Can do some nice things with it.

Well each to their own, it all depends what 'features' you use, plugins etc. On its own Max is quite stable, but theres a hell of a lot of stuff that will crash it / lock your pc up etc, at least thats the experience of the 3D artists I worked with (screams of 'max has crashed again'!).

Maya has a much better scripting language to let you really get the most out of it & texturing in max sucks. Our development used to be 100% max, after a while we did 50% max 50% maya, and at the end of the day most people from artists to programmers agreed that Maya > Max and we dropped Max support.

If max is cool for you stick with it, im just relaying the experiences of a development house with over 100 staff, and saying if your gonna look for a 3D modelling package I would at least investigate Maya before buying Max...
