Televisions

Hola!

I've been after a new large-format widescreen television for a while now...

i've ummed and ahhed about plasma technology for a bit and decided it's not quite for me as yet...

I've also had a teeny look at DLP/LCD rear projection sets, and while there are some simply stunning ones, i can't really find enough information about the technology to help me make up my mind on those....

so it looks like trusty old CRT is the way to go....

I was initially looking at some high-end brands such as Loewe as they have some very nice equipment to offer...

but it strikes me that i might be better off sticking with something a little more mainstream... so i've drawn up a shortlist of 4 sets that i think are suitable...

they are in order of price;

Panasonic TX36PB50 --£1349.00

Philips 36PW9607 --£1469.00

Toshiba 36ZP38 --£1479.99

Sony KD36NX200 --£1674.95

all prices include VAT, delivery and stands.

in the case of the toshiba the dvd player, video recorder AND 4 surround speakers are also included.

I've read magazine reviews of the toshiba - general opinion is it's STUNNING.... but then it also states that the only thing that can come close to it in same review, possibly besting it, is the philips set with its pixel-plus tech....

the panasonic is in there as a nod to saving some money.... and the sony is in there because i have a ton of sony kit and set great store by it....

so - anyone got any of these magnificent toys, or words of wisdom?

Haven't got any of these sets but as a gut reaction I'd go for the Philips. The free stuff on the Toshiba is all very well but it's probably not going to be the best.

As for the Sony are you paying the extra for the memory stick slot!!!! Now can anyone explain why a tv needs a memory stick?

The toshiba is the only crt to have progressive scan capabilities.. which is good.

CRT will indeed give you the best picture with no artifacts as it were.

This has been no help but then you have too much money to waste.

:)

Get some nice clothes... get fit and get a woman.

A tv like that will just make you more of a recluse :)

Whatever tv u get, make sure you like the remote control - a great tv with a shite remote makes a shite tv.

*unless* you plan on buying an av amp/receiver. They come with one for all remotes. I don't actually use my tele's remote anymore :D

(apart for teletext and aspect ratio, which is sadly missing from the allinone remote, everything else is there though :D)

tbh the Tosh is the best there, they'll all be top teles, but progressive scan will give you the best quality.. you just need to get a dvd player capable of it and some yank dvds :D

I am very happy with my 28" sony though, it's fab. Tbh, when you're spending that much money you're gunna get a fantastic tv regardless. I'm jealous. You're a tosser :/

Apparently the PCMCIA slot is used for viewing digital photos on the TV.

Ive got the Panasonic TX32PL1 and I am very very pleased with it.

Fantastic TV. I would go for the Panasonic TX36PB50 as Sony is usually more expensive and I dont believe you are getting anything extra for more money.

See if you can price match it with John Lewis that way you will also get a 5year Guarantee!

I hate remotes with tiny buttons, and no, I don't have fat fingers like clown, I just like meaty buttons on my remotes.

Therefore I would base my purchase upon this requirement.

I can safely write this nonsense as I can't see myself spending £1000+ on a TV for a good while yet.

You'd hate my amp remote then. It has tiny buttons simply because there's a lot to fit on there :/

Had a Sony for years. Best set I've ever owned. Got crappy Thomson set now. I'm buying Sont next time.

My parents have a 32" Sony Wega in the living room at home. It is the sexiest TV I have ever seen. The picture quality is absolutely top notch, the sound is pretty damn good (Sony TV's aren't usually recognised for this, but it seems they have pulled their fingers out their asses on this one.), and you can watch two channels at once.

Why on earth would you buy a TV made by anyone else? :/

I'm with you on the sony thing, my 28" has awesome picture quality and very good sound from the speakers (which I don't use anymore, natch). But tbh John, the reason you'd buy something other than sony is simply because the Toshiba is better. :/

Because, to do so would be to not follow your advice. And unfortunately, you have a hardon for VW and Sony which makes your judgement cloudy and not worth listening too.

Ok sony and panasonic make the best CRTs.

How's that?

Coming from the guy who bought an MGF thinking he looked "cool" in it I find that pretty fucking hilarious. Do you have a thing for poorly put together tarts cars or something?

Nath, the Toshiba might look pretty good now, but when it breaks down in 3 years time (as most Toshiba sets do) I can guarantee the thoughts running through Wolfeeh's mind will be "Why didn't I buy a Sony?".

I'm sure he could find somewhere to buy it with a 5 year garantee.

if he bought a Sony chances are the thing would still be working in 15+ years.
